Porsche Crest shifting

I have a 86 Carrera with 78k I think Im the third owner of the the car, any way I have put in the Seine gated shifter and changed the tranny fluid using Mobil 1 75/90 wt. oil. the shifter coupling has been adjusted per service manual and after many trips up and down my street the gated shifter from Seine worked well, accept the clips that hold the center pin to the shift lever should be included the in the kit .The Seine kit uses is much longer shaft and needs a c clip not a end style c clip wich the stock shifter set up comes with. My question is if a syncrho is going bad does it shift smooth some times then hard other times depending on the position of the gears when you select them.sometimes it goes right into second and sometimes it doesn't it doesn't matter if Im cornering or not ? I have read all about swepco and I plan on trying it out and changinging all 4 eng. and tranny mounts

You didn't mention replacing the bushings, so I'd suggest that before you worry about synchros and transmission mounts. Especially if it's intermittant. The whole bushing kit can be bought cheaply here at PP.
Good luck

All bushing except coupler bushing were replaced . The coupler bushing showed very little signs of any wear. they will be replaced though

1st to 2nd Gear

I've done the Swepco and bushing replacement on mine to try to fix the rough shifting problem. Made a little difference.

Mine shifts hard if I'm getting on it, easy when I take it easy. Depends on speed and RPM for how easily it shifts. Haven't noticed any difference when cornering, not sure how it could.

Good luck,

Gordo

Try double clutching, I do until my tranny gets the Swepco warmed up then she shifts smoother.

Scott,

Make sure your clutch is properly adjusted. It can make all the difference.

When shifting, make sure the clutch is all the way to the floor. Then ease the shifter into second, don't slam it or force it.

With 78k your shift coupler has at least moderate wear. I'd certainly replace those. What do they cost, $13?

I have forgot to mention the clutch disc ,throw out bearing and pressure plate are all new. Chuck I think you might be on to something though I did set up the clutch pedal linkage to the release lever to spec. but it might have changed a little over the last 500 miles or so flogging it.Thanks for your input,Scott{ ps that cat is great}

Scott, After adjusting the clutch, you may want to check the motor and transmission mounts. I went through the entire process as described above and each one made a little improvement. When i changed the motor and transmission mounts I felt the most improvement. My car seemed to be harder to shift into 2nd and 4th when the motor was hot. I guess the motor mounts would soften up with the heat. It is real easy to change the mounts. If I can do it, with the help of 101 Projects, anybody can.

Drew ,I thought about the mounts to it does shift better cold then hot.and that 101 book has been a great help for me also. The heat theory is a real good one. Thanks Scott

I changed the tranny coupler bushings it still hasn't changed anything . I drove the car around holding the selector shaft on the tranny and the eng. tranny move alot. I think my mounts are beat and when I shift sometimes the selector fork has a bogus preload from my wiggly eng.Mounts are my next step.

Interesting info about how the car shifts worse when warm!

My 86 does this and Ive been thinking about this very much lately... it shifts great when cold, but gets progressively worse when hot. If this is motor and tranny mounts, then I will be glad and very happy to replace them.

Thanks Drew T. Let us know what happens Rutherford.
