Clutch Adjustment Set Screw
Working through adjusting the clutch on the '77 911S...
Symptoms - occasional grinding going into 3rd.... usually from 4th to 3rd, but occasionally when going from 2nd to 3rd. Prev. Owner said the shop said worn Synchro....maybe... but I also replaced a completely shredded shift coupler bushing and that made a big difference... Feels like its wandering a bit when going into third so sometimes it nicks, sometimes not.... if I am super careful, it doesn't usually... I have the rest of the bushings to replace too. Maybe the slop is allowing the shifting to not be the same... anyway.... Question - when adjusting the set screw, the manual and Wayne's book says start with a 1.2mm gap, then tighten the clutch cable so that the gap is 1.0mm. What would happen if you tightened it more so that it was slightly less that 1.0mm... say .67mm? or .5mm? as long as the set screw isn't touching, it seems the clutch wouldn't be slipping... Just curious....

hi...to answer your 2nd q is ,if you make the clutch cable tight it will change the grabbing moment on your pedal. The little screw should always be at least 1 plus mm,for better free-play at the pedal.
I used to do adjustment for tall people with a little loose clutch cable so it will grab on the lower portion at the pedal cluster. If you make it tight-er it will engage higher..... You problem seems to me is the adjustment of your shift coupler....use the search button on top for adjustments.... Ivan |
