g50 for '88 930 -- do I need a short one?

Have been considering converting my '88 930 to a G50. As I research the subject, I've seen somewhat contradictory statements made regarding the necessity to shorten the "stock" G50. In particular, that shortening is only required for model years '86 and older. I understand that this would be true of a Carrera, where in '87 the G50 became standard, but how about my 930? Do I need a shortened unit for this to work?

Thanks all.

Interesting question. They did some changes to the area where the G50 was in 87 to the 911. I can't see how they could do this to the 930 and still use a 915 for the next 2 years. What contradictatory information did you uncover?

Well, I had read previously that to fit a G50 into a 4 speed 930, the bellhousing had to be shortened. So, I inferred that this covered all through 1988, though years were not specifically mentioned. So I've been assuming that a shortened version is what I need.

Just recently, I read that "shortening is required to install a G50 on pre-1987 models". This was in a topic discussing the turbo cars, but the quote didn't specifically state that the 87-88 turbos could or could not take a stock G50.

Thus my confusion...

Along the same lines, a friend has had a G50 conversion done on a late 70's turbo and absoulutely loves it. The gear ratios work great with his turbo's powerband. My mechanic did the conversion with him and it sounded like it wasn't a simply procedure with very tight clearances. Her is a pic of his turbo.

Love those kinesis rims!

I'm _pretty_ sure that the confusion has do do with the G50 upgrade to the '87+ Carrera's. They didn't do the upgrade to the 930 till the 89 model year, even though the 87 Turbo Look Option cars do have the tube modification for the Carrera G50 transmission.
