Hey James,

Might want to check out something like this. It was at $9300 with only a few hours left. Be careful, and make sure you get a PPI. Whatever happens, there will ALWAYS be a great deal, somewhere. You just have to be patient. Anyhow, check this out....

If it didn't turn into a "link", just cut and paste it into your browser space for a web address.

HAVE FUN.

Don't you know the rules by now? EVERY car on Ebay is "rare".

In this case, he may be talking about the color. I don't know if "Aberdeen Green exterior" is really rare, but I haven't seen many green ones.

I don't know about the $1000.00, non-refundable deposit" though.

Tom

While this isn't a hard-and-fast rule, I tend to shy away from p-car ads where the description of the stereo is one of the first or largest entries.

....to me ebay is for looky, looky not for buying...for $9300 your jetta could be doing 0-60 in 6sec.

Perhaps that is the internet in general. On alt.autos.porsche, we recently had a poster selling an all-original 78 turbo with the rare 4-speed gearbox and factory option BBS rims. When called on the fact that this transmission was the standard one and the rims had to be after-market, he claimed to have plenty of documentation proving he ordered the car that way new.

As usual, when asked to produce such information, he explained that he had nothing to prove to a bunch of losers like us, and besides, he'd already sold the car for more than he was asking, so nyah.

...and it'd still be a Jetta.

I owned a Jetta for four and a half years, and now the lady has a Golf. Don't get me wrong - I love VWs - but it's not comparable to a Porsche 911. Be realistic.

Like a moron i went out and leased this special edition Jetta and then i got canned from work. NEedless to say i cant fork over the 400 dollar a month bill payment for the stupid thing. thats why i want to get rid of it. then on a 10000 loan i can knock my payments down by at least half. If theres anyone out there looking for a 1.8 Turbo wolfsburg ed. jetta. mine is white and i am asking 19 for payoff

I hate to burst your bubble, but if you can't swing the $400 a month then you shouldn't be looking at a 911. You could easily see maintenance items that get your right back to $400+. And you might get a big surprise bill for thousands.

If you are looking for economy, don't buy a Porsche.

You sure you want to buy a 20 year old Porsche? While your monthly payment might drop, you are likely in for significant maintenance/repair costs...especially in the price range you're looking. Being able to afford to *buy* a 911 is different than being able to afford to *own* a 911.

Cool

I would tend to agree with the budgetary advice. I own my two old p-cars outright, but even with no "payments", most months I probably spend at least $400 on them if not more, between routine maintenance, restoration, and performance/upgrade mods. A lot of this is due to my increasing track driving addiction (tires etc), but still...

Keep in mind that everything on a 69-89 911 costs roughly the same to work on or restore as a 914...except the engine, which costs about 2-3X as much, if major work or parts are required. A piston & cylinder set alone for a 911 costs almost as much as a complete 914/4 rebuild...

To be brutally frank, after getting laid-off from work probably isn't a great time to go and buy an old "cheap" (money pit) 911!

Just my $.02

Good luck,

Ditto on above- and that goes for the $5000 "hasn't been maintained since Reagan was president" SC- double. It will bankrupt you faster than you can say,"what's a headstud"?
There will always be plenty of 911's around- good ones and cheap ones- wait until you have money in the bank. Good luck.

I would recommend a 914 or even air cooled VW to stay in the "family" and then upgrade when you have the cash. The tools and repairs will be similar to the 911 and cost less.

Using a beater for a daily driver sometimes does not work out very well.

As a reference my 911 has been amazingly cheaper to own than I expected. Over two years I have spent maybe $400 on repairs. Then again it is not a DD and I have not done any upgrades yet, which get expensive fast.

Good Luck,
