Missing ashtray mount part?

What am I missing? The ashtray has a hook on it, but there's nowhere for it to hook on the dash. I can't find anything in the diagrams...

Here's the ashtray:

And the dash:

Is it for your 76 912? I had the same problem when I bought my 80 SC Targa this summer. Here are a couple of pics of the part I bought from another poster here.

Here is an Instagram post of how it works when it is correctly installed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BXXHVmCHzOu/?taken-by=911sctarga

By the way, I couldn't figure out how it worked until I got the piece and held it up to the ashtray. Once I had it in my hand I could see how it all fit together.

That's the part! I wish I had a part number or even the right name for the part. My searches for "ashtray mount plastic part" aren't working.

It's for my '70T. Sold the 912E a while ago but I can't update my signature on here!

I'm not sure if this is helpful, but here is the part diagram and the page that I think gives the part number for that piece, which I think is part number 24 in the diagram. This is from the 78-83 catalog for the SC, which I found on the internet, I think on the Porsche site. Of course, it may or may not be the same part for yours.

After taking a close look at it and installing it, no one is allowed to open the ashtray - it looks like a poor design and easily broken (and expensive) part.

Haha yeah I believe it. I've just had the ashtray ziptied in there for 15 years, I'll probably end up going back to that tried and true method.

Unfortunately that part isn't on that page of the PET, part 24 is the little metal edge that prevents your cigs from melting the rubber trim. My guess is that the part in question may be listed somewhere else but I can't find it anywhere.
