87 Targa bar (rear) seal question

My car is an 87 and I have already bought Dan's windshield seal, but I need to replace the rear one and door seals as well. I am wondering if for those parts the after market seals work OK? I realize that the originals are typically the best, but if I don't have to I don't want to spend the extra money.

Also I noticed that the part number for the 87 - on cars is different. What is the difference from the previous version on the back?

Thanks in advance.

I did mine about 2 years ago on my 1973. I used the OEM Seals listed in the Pelican catalog for the rear bar. They work just fine.

There are numerous threads here. Install of the Seal is tricky. Find the video in German along with the Factory install guides to be sure you know all the details.

Thanks Harry, the 87 seal t has a different part number, I was just wondering what exactly is different from the previous versions. Unfortunately there are less options for these.

Door seals - I'd go with the ones from International Mercantile personally. They are the correct, older "flap" style which shed water better than the newer "tube" style that our host sells.

The rear seal: OEM is not quite as high quality as genuine Porsche. This being a key sealing point for the targa, my advice is to go Porsche (bite the bullet on the cost). I've had both and am about to install the Porsche one as the OEM version doesn't look or seal right. Not sure what the difference is in 87 and up seals.

I went with the newer ones. A bit fiddly but I got them to route the water correctly. If I had to do it again, I would consider the earlier flap type design.

The seal is fiddly to install and you need to get which ever one you choose positioned exactly correctly for the parts to work. As I said above, there are two Porsche Supplements out there (PM me your e-mail if you would like a copy) and there is a you tube video (in german) showing the install method by the factory. All well worth reading. Find it here:Targa seal install in Austin TX? Dan Petchel-recommended?
