possible to tell paint color from VIN?

My paint plate in door jamb is missing, ROW car, all other plates on car are intact.

I Had some old paper work on car with what seemed to be color code 956 Pewter Metallic, my painter mixed up some paint and its not even close.

I know the car was painted at some point, It appears to be the factory color as the engine bay and frunk match and I know they are factory untouched.

Anyway to tell color of car?

Nope, not from the VIN alone.

VIN can get you COA which will tell you the color.

Check in the front trunk - you may find a color number and description up there. This is what I found in my ‘84 Targa

Unfortunately, no COA for for ROW only North American cars.

I got a COA for my '84 930.

I didn't think I could get one, but I shot them an email before ordering to make sure.

Paper work I had said 956 Pewter Metallic. Obviously that’s not the case. The car is more champagne

That looks like Platinum Metallic, a fairly common color in the early 80s US cars. Same paint as listed on the sticker that Jack Stands posted. Here's a gratuitous shot of my Platinum Metallic targa in reassembly after fresh paint currently, if it helps:

Not correct in my case. I have a '77 Carrera 3.0 (ROW) and got a COA no problem.

If the car is an 1981 or later (17 digit VIN) then getting the paint code is easy enough with the VIN. If you just compared the liquid paint with the original surface, then that will be unlikely to give a proper match. A proper spray card would work better. However, even the choice of primer color can make a big difference.
