Non-metallic slate gray on a midyear

Thanks to a minor fender bender my 74 is finally going in to be repainted. I believe I've settled on a non-metallic gray, specifically I think I'm close to zeroing in on a slate gray.

While the car in the picture that I've attached is clearly not a midyear car, my 74 does have bright work on it that would probably also pop like in the picture below.

Can I ask if that looks like a Porsche Slate Gray to your eyes? I know color matching off Internet pictures is dubious at best, but trying to make sure that I'm clear on what the colors look like. Anyone have a midyear that they painted this color?

Thank you and best wishes for a happy new year to all

I've always loved that shade. My very first VW ('64) was very similar (if not same) color.
Go for it.

I'm going for the same combination at some point (non-metallic gray and brightwork trim).

I want something a shade or two darker than that.

There's also some old Mercedes colors that I've seen in person and fell for...

I think Toyotas "cement" paint color would look good as well.

Good morning Charles, thanks for the note back. I noticed that you also own a 1974!

tdskip 01-02-2018 08:38 AM

Thanks for those pictures Mike, all variations on a very similar shade. I like those too.

I did come across the Toyota cement color, I actually had a chance to see that color in person and it may have just been the lighting on that day but it had more blue undertones in it than I expected from the pictures. It did suit the truck that it was on, also quite handsome.

Thanks!

Steve McQueen's 76 930 was painted Porsche 356 Slate Gray by the factory which is a different mix than later 911 Slate Grays.

Just a data point. It has a little green in it. There are several threads out there on it, including the mix.

I would definitely stick to the 66/67/68 original Porsche Slate Grey. Post 62 below.

Hello!
Yes a '74 Targa. I'm jealous of your 3.2 though....I'd love go go that route.

On paint colors - mine was originally metallic silver, which I rather like. But it's been color changed at least twice so switching back to original would be much more than I can afford to do correctly. So, my plan is to fix a couple of rust areas and shoot it with Zolatone :

It's a multi color paint that has a rough texture. No worries about rock chips or small dings or dents. Some day when the budget allows I'll do a proper restoration back to Met. Silver....
Cheers,
-C

I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same colour, but VW called it "anthracite"

Saw this today - very handsome.

That's almost a gunmetal blue. Very nice.

You can't go wrong with Slate Grey. I started a thread about non-metallic greys: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/918016-need-inspiration-show-me-non-metallic-grey-colors.html

You can find some inspiration there as well. A friend of mine had his car painted Porsche Grey Black. It is a newer color and darker than Slate Grey. Good luck with your choice.

Yes grey-blk is a nice choice. Did my 964 in that color.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1515522144.jpg

Thanks guys, I'll go check out that other thread.

Have people been happy with the current paint formulations getting the color right?
