Rear window defog, two settings?

My rear window defog switch has two steps. Does anyone know what the difference between the two steps on the switch are? (My users manual is in German)

I have a 1977 Turbo with two switch positions first position is first stage on rear window (150 watts)and also the windscreen the second stage is double the watts for the rear window only.. also actuating the switch in either position also activates the heated outside mirrors..hope this help

pull switch=defog
pull switch then turn=defrost(i.e. fully energized element)

Two steps for the defog is like the "coolness" dial on the AC. When on earth does a 911's AC system get the car too darn cold? And when does it get rid of fog or ice on the windows so quickly that you want to pull it back a notch?

In my opinion, a simple on/off switch for each would be more honest.

I think....

that turning it to the right activates only the center defrost lines (the ones you would need to minimally see out)...devoting all the power to these 5-6 lines to defrost the line of sight quickly.

Pulling it out activates all of them evenly, with less power since it is distributed thru all the lines.

Nick.

Mine just stopped working, so I can't tell you for sure. But it did work.

Turn--defog includes mirrors
Pull--defrost

According to the '84 manual.

Thanks guys.

It looks like Nikshu is right.

I took off all the panels in the rear. The defog lines are indeed partitioned so that the center section has its own power and the top an bottom sections have a secondary power wire. When the defog switch is pulled to the first step only the center defog lines get power. When the defog switch is pulled all the way all three sections get power.
