Well, most struts are labeled. This one says Boge on the strut tube. Early is a pinch bolt, later is a wedge bolt for the ball joint. 3 1/2 (vs 3) came later and is measured center to center at the caliper mounting holes.

Huge difference between channel locks and a pipe wrench. Im sure you will succeed with the latter.

The right tool makes all the difference.

New strut inserts should come with at least one pair of caps that will fit your struts.
