Transmission Questions
Hey Guys,
I'm thinking about swapping my '73 915 transmission for a '75-'77 930 short bell housing (to go in a '77 911). My questions are: - Will the short bell housing 930 tranny bolt right in to existing mount points? - Will all the 915 external hardware/components bolt directly onto the 930? - Is the 930's 4th gear significantly taller than the 915's stock 5th gear? Thanks in advance. Jack |

Hello Jack,
The answer for top speed is highly dependent on which ring and pinion ratio is in there. If it is still stock 7:31 top speed will only be in the low 140s, whereas a 930 will go over 170mph. If it's been retrofit with an 8:31 the 915 will go closer to 160mph. I used a 25.7" rear tire and 6000rpm because you've previously told me you run a v8. Different tires and redline move these numbers around quite a bit. The gearbox is bolt in. You will need the 930 shift rod. You likely have course spline stubs right now. You will need 930 fine spline ones and may have a CV compatibility issue depending on whether or not your CVs are 100mm or 108mm and 4 bolt or 6 bolt. But they aren't major issues technically, just added costs of conversion.

You will also need a 930 shifter.
The throw is much longer in the 930 gearbox. |
