… gee I wonder what they are doing here engine stand or dyno … if a dyno it must have a resistance coupler bolted to the rear of the engine …. nice stand setup with the adjustable legs …. 8,400 rpm to break in a cam … ?

bench test 911 engine

hi dave, i have started so many different types of engines on the ground/test cell over the years i cant remember them all. i have started dozens of aircooled 911 engines on many different types of carts, dollies etc. over the years. my job in 1980 was test running and data logging overhualed lycoming and continental aircraft engines on a test cell (converted milk truck). you will not have a problem running your engine on a dolly or cart as long as it is stable. here are some pics of a 3.2 SS i just finished building in dec. and the heavy duty steel cart i use to test run the engine to check for any issues.the cart is on wheels and does not move at all regardless of rpm,the engine sits flat on the heat exchangers and is very stable. if you have any questions or need any advice i will be glad to help, richardhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1517183233.jpg

bench test 911 engine

dave, i am sure that one of the things you will be looking for is intake leaks. i have seen cis systems leak from just about every where and sometimes from strange places you would not think to check. looking for these leaks with the motor installed can be a real beitch, if you have access to a smoke machine it really makes finding the leaks a breeze even the strange ones. they are pretty pricey but are invaluable for making sure all systems are sealed up before install. i saw a youtube video where a guy put together a homemade one, very creative, might want to look in to that. talk about leaks from strange places the motor in the pic was leaking through the elec. connector to the aux. air regualator but only cold with the valve window open, once the regulator was preheated and the window closed the vacuam leak stopped.this leak was very minimal and only affected the amount of bypass air when cold so we did not replace it. i use my smoke pro for many different applications of leak testing not just automotive, i think you could build something fairly inexpensive and will make life alot easier. richardhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1517251610.jpg

That's a sweet setup. Very clean and very functional. What's the best way to get fuel there. I'm trying to rig up a CIS system/fuel pump to run mine out of the car as well.

sal, you can use just about any cis pump to run the engine, for that matter you could also use just about any bosch electronic F/I or cis pump if you just want to start and run it. if you dont have multiple pumps laying around like i do i would pull the pump from the car and use it. the pump on this setup is from a 964 and is half assed into a 944 isolator and hose clamped to the cart handle. run a 12mm id fuel line stuck in a 5 gallon can of fuel to the suction side of the pump and hook pressure side to a fuel filter inlet (preferably a mahle kl22 dont use a kl21) and outlet to cis inlet on the engine.run 8mm return line (near intake pipe #3 cyl.) and stick it back in 5 gallon gas can. you will have to round up an array of fittings to do this and will probably have to get creative. luckily i have a 35 year accumulation of porsche parts so its relatively easy for me to do this. not sure if you can see in the pics but i have multiple fire extinguishers access at every angle just in case, potential fire danger is very real and this procedure should be approached with extreme caution, richard

Thanks for the reply Richard. Going to try it come spring.

… Found this and it may well be of some interest to us guys here when testing an engine with no trans attached - here is the link :

Engine Test Stand for Air-cooled Porsche and VW

… you know if you can take the engine out and it is not some kinda Hakki Motto experience and put it on a bench or trolley or stand it makes a world of difference … I once about 20 some years ago installed what I believe they called Porsche racing groups RSR rocker arm shaft seals … basically donut rubber seals ... the punch of the story was I installed them while the engine was in the car & SSI's all in place as well … so to install you have to remove all the rocker shaft and arms and associated tensioners using a 90 degree hex wrench and create some of your own wrenches and tools to get er done … and I bet some folks think setting valves at .004 is a chore thank you very much ! …. thus my appreciation for having the means at my disposal these days to not have to do that anymore … many times thru the years I had no other choice and had to do such ridiculous gymnastics because I was always a poor guy that just happened to own a porsche …. - dave

if you look at my second photo, post 7, you will see the full circle starter frame in use. It works ok-but you will have to weld up some brackets to hold it up.
