Engine tin powdercoating - use hi-temp powder?

Hi -

My local powdercoater asked if they should use a hi-temp. coating for the engine cooling & surround tins... They said the hi-temp powder is about 4X the cost...

Given the threads of folks doing their own powdercoating, I'm assuming that regular powder is probably fine, but I wasn't sure, so I thought I'd ask to see what others have done.

Thanks!
Tom

I’ve had it done with regular powder on a couple engines and it still looks new, years later.

Not necessary. Most powders are cured at 400-450 degrees. If your tin gets that hot you have much bigger problems.

Stick with the normal powdercoating process. I have done this on over a DOZEN engines now and it still looks new years later.

If your tin is being scorched by high temperatures you have bigger problems than the powdercoating failing.

Same here. It's baked at 500+ F

That's what the factory told me but it was an industrial powder coater. Not a boutique type place.

Ditto - I did the fan housing and the flapper boxes a half-dozen yrs ago and they're holding up great.

I bet he was talking about the ceramic coating (Jet Hot) like for headers which is 2000 deg.
