Failed smog

After years of great smog tests my 85 3.2 it finally failed smog. What failed was the HC at 117, max allowed 97. My experienced tech said a new oxygen sensor could be my problem. I went online to look at them and some of them require cutting/ splicing wires. Are there any sensors out there that just plug in on reinstall? Thanks, Nick

Never mind, I just realized that there are two types, OEM and universal. Anyway, I hope the new one works. HC is the only thing that failed.

HC is unburnt fuel right? Luckily we don't have experience of this - but what if you leaned the idle mix out? too simple?

CO was 0.29 at 15 mph and 0.31 at 25 mph.

proporsche 02-03-2018 12:25 PM

nick it is too lean....

Nick Triesch 02-03-2018 12:57 PM

OK, I understand. But what would change a system that was fine to be too lean? It has only been about 6000 miles since my last test?

proporsche 02-03-2018 01:02 PM

that is a lot

What's the time period for that 6k miles. 2 years?

Nick Triesch 02-03-2018 01:26 PM

Yup, about two years. Ill check after I fix my 02 sensor engine plug connector that broke while removing the rubber sleeve.

We are talking Kalifornia here. In Kalifornia depending on which zip code you live in, a smog check on '75 and newer cars may be required.

As long as you all can keep a secret.

When my dad passed away a few years back, I inherited his 1977 911 S. I’m in Kalifornia as you referred, and was facing a real conundrum. When I went to transfer the car into my name, the nice lady behind the counter said the car is a bi-annual smog car. My dad lived in a county that did not have to smog vehicles so I assumed I was screwed. Well the lady told me t list his street address first, then mine underneath on the title. Well needless to say, I get the registration every year, but never have to smog the Porsche. The DMV thinks the car still lives in a non-smog county. I don’t take what the angel at the DMV did for me for granted! Loopholes!
