Round ignition-key cover removal?
Hi guys,
I did a search and got impatient. Can't find out how to remove the round plastic surround on our ingnition switches? There are some tiny holes but no joy when I put an allen wrench in there? Anyone done this? ![]() Thanks! Scott

Scott, the hole is just to put something in to turn it; it has threads that turn on to the ignition piece- it just unscrews.

Okay, so my intent was to paint it flat black with a coat of flat clear so that I can occasionally clean it.
The paint keeps getting a mottle even after I clean and prep it.....makes me suspect something besides a plastic material? Any ideas, came off in a Jiff btw, thanks!

My best guess is that thing has seen a lot of silicone based products like Armorall over its life and that’s why the paint won’t stick. Try a stronger solvent and a primer.

Scuff it up with scotchbrite, wash with a good degreaser, dry, prime then paint.

Go to an auto body paint supply shop; they have plastic prep primer adhesion promoter stuff in a spray can.

I had the same experience, fish eye, etc. I used plastidip, not the greatest solution, but it works.

I primed it then sprayed two coats of flat black, looks new, no fisheye this time. I'll add a couple of coats of clear and post a picture. I'm always amazed at how shoddy these covers look in even the nicest cars? The 911's I've had have all had that aged milky look to them. Lets down the whole instrument panel in my opinion. Much ado about such a small thing but such an easy fix, I recommend it. Love the support that I find here, thanks guys. Scott

There was no need to paint it.
You can get one of those "Back to Black" products, and it works.

I agree with Sugarwood.
First, remove it and degrease it. I like Brake Cleaner for this. Then wipe on "Back to Black" to restore a rich original appearance. I tighten it by hand all though there is a tool for this purpose. Regards,

Thanks guys, I've used B to B on several trim pieces, I find it temporary at best. Must say that I never tried it on my ignition cover though...S

Bit late to the party , but I use circlip pliers to remove it. The expanding version - squeeze the pliers and the nose opens. Open enough to poke in to the two holes. You can loosen/tighten as much as needed. Will undo the hard to parts.
