not having a good day with the 02 sensor
 

Went to change the 02 sensor in my 85 today but it must be the original because when i carefully tried to pull off the rubber connector the small connecting part broke off in the engine area!!! What to do?? Am I doomed? The Part with wires that needs to be replaced goes to the mystery dark corners of Stranger things!!! Any ideas? A fellow Pelican named Louie85 was making these as replacements...looks like as recently as early '17. Check this out:

Get in touch with Louie85. He makes and sells the replacement parts. His are actually better than OEM. The only slightly tricky part is that the wire leading into the broken connector is a dual shielded set so you have to strip back two separate pieces of insulation and ensure they are adequately insulated from each other.
I did this very recently, so let me know if you need any support. Your breakage is very common.

I contacted Louie85 for the part. Could you tell me a more detail how to change the part. The wires leading to the connectors is very short. Really not enough room to work. not quite sure how to remove the little orange connector.

I understand now the entire connector is replaced. Sill, I only have a quarter inch to work with.

997at, I sent you a private message on how to make the connection to the old connector as per Louie 85. In his photos, he shows using the old connector in conjunction with the new unit. I need to know how he hooked up the broken connector with the black wire. Thank you. Nick

I think I was the only one making these as of late. I have a few left if you want one. I don't plan on making any more after these are gone.

Hi Nick..remind me in what state you are in?Why do you need the oxy sensor.I understand you like to have it fixed thanx to Goth which is cool.But there is no need to have the oxy plugged in unless you go for smog inspection..right?..it takes a lot of power away from your engine...

My understanding is the O2 sensor is actually your friend.

When you are at idle and normal cruising, it keeps the AF mixture at stoich AF proportion which is not a bad thing at all for idle and cruising.

There are many things the Lambda system does based on sensors, switches, etc that instantly bypass the input of the O2 sensor and revert to a more mechanical injection system.

The don't call it Lambda in the Motronic engines but you know it did not slip their minds.

I say keep it in OP's 85. More good than harm.

Hi Bob.the oxy system makes the emission cleaner...that is a fact..but back in 2008 i did go for smog test with my euro 911 1985 and i have past in California test with out the oxy sensor in the system.I do have it but i made a little short cut on my ecm with a single switch i can by pass the lambda circuit...
so my suggestion for test ok after disconnect;-)

My 81 passed in Ohio w/o cat in 2005 but failed in 2006 because they implemented CO constraints.

I drove home after failure, put the cat back on, drove to the testing place the next weekend and they told me it was over 25 years old and I was exempt from emission requirements.

It was Christmas in July. :D

Hi. This whole thing started because I failed my smog test here in South San Diego the other day. The only part I failed was the High HC numbers. My longtime smog mechanic told me that I need a new 02 sensor. So when removing the sensor from the little ceramic connector, the connector was broken off. I have a feeling by the looks of the 02 sensor that it is 32 years old. Anyway I have a new connector on order but I am worried about the install because Porsche gave me no room to splice! No play in the green wire. But,.........I will fix it!!! I have had no room before!!!HC was 117 at 15 mph and 82 at 25 mph.

hi Nick what was you CO? If it is too low the HC will go up

That is measured after the catalyst or before?I would put more fuel there that will lower the HC...with the oxygen sensor disconnected.I would put 0.5-6 Once you plug the sensor it will go down and clean up your results.

i do not know if you are able to measure it your self.The car was usually set up by inserting the pipe before catalyst to test the set up,providing you have the type with the extra cap under the oxy sensor.
