911SC Fog Light Switch Install Questions

My dash set up for my 1978 model is factory, with the fog light switch located between the cigarette lighter on the right and the rear window defogger on the left. The glove box is immediately to the right, past the cigarette lighter.

As part of some troubleshooting I just did, my fog lights don't work, but both bulbs were removed from the lamps on the car and tested and both work with 12v applied. I also ran 12v from the battery directly to the #1 fuse on the front fuse block in the trunk area and both fog lights lit up. However, the fogs won't light when the car is running and the headlights are on. They don't work when you pull the switch and don't put the headlights on, just the running lights. The switch itself doesn't light up, but is supposed to. I am going to replace the switch and finally found the replacement part (tough to find).

Question: has anyone tried to replace the switch by removing the glove box inner liner? I assume the glove box will drop down once the strap that surrounds it is disconnected. I'd rather not dismantle the entire HVAC set up in the trunk area to get to the fog dash switch when this simpler solution might work. Any concerns I should be aware of before I drop the glove box liner? Anyone done this job this way and can offer instructions? Thanks for any feedback.

Doesn’t work removing the glove box, there is a metal panel in the way.
You have to go in via the trunk.
Have you checked if the relay for the fog lamps is working?

yes it's working. Traded it with the horn relay and the horn worked with both.

there's no room above the radio if the glove box were removed?

Glove box attaches below the sheet metal of the dash panel. Shine a light in on the passenger side of the trunk. you will see the sheet metal curves up over the glove box area.
Believe me, I tried the same thing.

Just being a bit more lazy! Thanks for the guidance....

Dennis, I will be addressing this too. I just took a quick look without taking off the barrier to under the dash. But it appears that the defroster motor is there. Does that have to come out or can I reach the switch beneath it?

Thanks for any help.

I was able to reach the switches by removing the blower motor cardboard cover and only the vent tube to the dash center vent. Reaching in on passenger side of trunk. But, I have long arms and am used to working in blind areas by feel in my day job.
It is about the worst place on our cars to access...

Ok, many thanks. Hate going in blind, if you know what I mean. :)

Old thread but in case anyone stumbles across it looking to access the fog light area. I found it was easier to remove the clock from inside the car and you have easy access to the fog light location. Seemed much simpler than going in from the trunk.
