fuel pump testing

i had some fuel starvation problems this weekend that prevented a mountian drive on a great monday afternoon. a new fuel filter later in the afternoon cured what ailed my cis system and restored power to continue the plot. i rescued the fuel from the intake side of the soiled filter and put it in a jar to examine, the filter change was way over due. i also ran my fuel pump by jumping the deal in the fuse bank. it sounded like a hamster wheel and in the host's book 101 PROJECTS, it warned of a squeeky pump being a time bomb. i would however like to test the output on the pump. i found the section in the bently manual covering the test proceedure. my question is this, does the test really require the test gauge that hooks/reattaches to both sides of the line off the control pressure regulator on the fuel dist? or, is this a safety issue to avoid spraying gas all over?

if i can test (60-75 psi) it from just the regulator line off the fuel dist unit i can use a gauge i already have. that said,, mr. walker, or others could you tell me what the metric pipe thread size is for the test outlet on the regulator line?

toby

this is half the cost of a new pump

Good questions. Wish I knew the answers. I'd guess that you don't really need to connect to both sides. In my experience, pressure is not where pumps fall down and skin their noses. Volume is the more common problem.
