Koni seems to have used a few different shades of orange over time. The new inserts and rear shocks were significantly more red than the front struts. I took part of my front struts to the auto store to find a matching color. They had something on the shelf that was pretty darn close.

Chevrolet Orange engine enamel from Duplicolor or Plasti-cote is what I used when refinishing my front struts and rear shocks. It was a very close match to brand new KONI paint out of the box. Several people couldn't tell that they were refinished!
Older KONIs from the '60s were a more subdued orange than newer shocks in the '70s. The brighter Chevrolet Orange seems to have appeared around 1969 or 1970.

I am getting ready to powder coat my Koni struts and had the same question. The new inserts I ordered are significantly more red than the orange-red color on the struts (from 1977).
I asked Paragon if they had a paint code from Koni and the response was: Sherwin-Williams #140-0548 - red high visibility safety Also take a look here: http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/archive/index.php/t-34526.html So another option is Orange - t-31 plasti-kote I won't have too many options with powder coat colors, though. Hello,
A while back I e-mailed Koni Racing tech and received this reply: From: info [mailto:info@truechoicekoniracingservices.com] Sent: Thursday, January 12, 2006 4:12 PM To: Fournier, Ronald F MVR Subject: RE: Koni Strut Painting We can paint your strut housings for you but the paint is simply Plasticote #200 Chevrolet Engine Orange Enamel if you wish to do them yourself. Thank You, Phil Hope this helps. I never got around to checking the color match since I haven't made it to my strut rehab yet. Ron

By the way, I did end up powder coating my Koni strut housings (thanks Jamie). The color I used is RAL 2002 from Tiger Drylac:

I just went to my powder-coater and grabbed a handful of color chips and I settled on the exact color you chose! It's not a perfect match but I did try to take into account that these struts are 50 years old. ![]() |
