Question 72 911

Did these cars have an oil level indication?

Are you asking about the one on your dashboard? I think some do and some don't. In my '73 manual it shows that there is for some E's and T's
I think all S's had the oil level indicater.

Don't go by the oil level indicater, it's not very accurate. Use the dipstick on level ground, on a warm idling engine.

I agree with Tim that the oil level indicator is not the first choice for determining when you need oil. However, once you figure out where the guage rests when you have the correct level in your car, it is a good substitute for the dipstick.

Thanks guys. I ask because I was looking at a parts diagram for the 72 and I didn't see a level sender as part of the diagram. I'm doing a project where I think the 72 oil tank will work well but I want the level, only because I want the gauge to work. As you pointed out I won't rely on it but I do want it functional.

Tryan nailed it...the optional on all models "S" gauge package contains the oil level gauge. Pretty well useless unless you read it under the same conditions you need to check with the dipstick. That is, car sitting level, temp above 180 degrees, engine revs at idle. For your project, it would be easiest to get the oil tank from a car that had the "S" gauges...
