engine bay buzzing noise
Hey guys,
I have an 85 911, and i have this odd buzzing comming from what looks like some sort of vacuum valve on the passenger side of the engine bay. It appears to have a line connected to the oil tank, an then another running behind the engine. It buzzes sometimes, mostly when comming to a stop, I can also hear the idle change just SLIGHTLY when it buzzes I took this pic from another pose, hopefully the owner doesnt mind. If so i will remove it. It doesnt show the valve, but i circled where it is for refrence. any ideas? Andrew

Hi Andrew,
That looks like a 964 engine with power steering and that will create a bit of a buzz. Check the oil level and get a helper to move the wheel while you're in the back listening... Good luck!

hey guys..
I actually have a 3.2 85... i just used that pic to show where the valve is placed. Buckterrier: is that normal? i am used to the world of watercooled 4 cyls where the PCV is on the valve cover, so i didnt even think of that! Andrew |

Wow! I also have this buzzing sound. It's on an '84 Carrera with no power steering. The same exact situation you describe. I have not tracked it down yet but it is definitely coming from the passenger side engine bay. (at least that's what it sounds like while driving it.)
Somebody, please! Help us! Put a little Pelican brain power to work! |

Adeihi, I'm a Newbie, & don't EVEN profess to be mechanically inclined. I have a friend of mine that was a Porsche mechanic in the day. He thinks that's what the buzzing, rattling may be. Went to two auto parts store for the PVC valve only to be told either place had them. So Tuesday I'll go to a forgien cars parts store or a dealer to get it. Will let you know if that's what it was. But yes I need Pelican brain power!

This post is cracking me up.....LOL....I've been thinking about writing it myself for a while. I have an '84 that I think is doing the same thing.
I thought it was loose interior panels, so I'm reaching back there pushing on the back seat, the seatbelts, the windows, the speaker grills........ The sound is more like a buz than a rattle but it only seems to do it while I'm driving the car so I've never been able to hear it from the engine compartment. It's pretty loud but it only lasts for a second each time it does it. The buzzing sound kind of winds up, then down, then stops.........completely bizzare, I havn't noticed any idle change w/ mine though. Anyone know what that valve does???

Mattcamp,
Double LOL! I did one better. I had the wife drive the car and I stuffed myself in the back seat to push on panels, and seat belts, and speaker grills, and anything else I could get my hands on. VERY uncomfortable! Could someone post a link to the part. Pelican brain power....UNITE!!!!! |

hahha!! i am glad my accidental post helped a few people. Aparently the valve ties in with the vacuum system somehow, could it be the source of the oil system vacuum??
Anyway, i have done a little research and I found that there is a diaphram inside that gets stuck sometimes. Some have cleaned it with brake clean and had good results... i think i might just replace mine. Andrew |

Goober,
That is funny $hit.........TRIPPLE LOL......I was about to go that far but the last time I let her drive it (make that second to last); we were getting on the freeway on-ramp & she pretty much redlined it in first and second (which I have no problem with, by the way). The problem started when at 6500 RPM's in second gear, she went to hit third and slammed it ino first gear..........my tach doesn't go high enough to show me what the engine was doing, but trust me; it was winding up pretty good......We were just about to merge into traffic when the a$$ end slid hard to the left. To my wifes defense; what could have been a major spin out/60mph wreck with a log truck, turned out to be nothing more than a heart stopper..........She recovered from the spin then pulled over so I could check my shorts............Kind of a long segway but this just happened so that's my story and I still let her drive it; anyway.........it's just a car, right??????? That last one was hard to type.

Could this be the occasional odd noise coming from the back, sounds like back right, of my ’85 coupe? My noise is sort of a groan foghorn moose buzz that stops immediately if I blip the throttle. I haven’t climbed in the back, but I’m pretty sure there are no moose back there.

Hey this is great we also have an '85 911. Just checked and we don't have a moose in back either so must be the valve. Many many thanks to whoever started this thread. I was about to crawl in back and start pushing on stuff while my wife drove also. That buzzing thing is sure aggrevating.

PSJoyce,
Yep that is the valve, As soon as there is loss of vacuum the valve closes...I'm actually trying to do some research to see if we actually NEED it for proper engine function. Anyone have an old one they want to crack open and take a picture of? I am not sure if it is a one way valve, or simply a diapghram that moves at a certain vacuum pressure Andrew Last edited by adeihl; 01-01-2007 at 09:39 AM.. |

Here is a picture of the valve. (#31 in the pic)
The old valve part # of 930 207 227 00 is superceded to 930 207 227 01 with some additional pieces needed. You will need the following part #s. 930 207 236 01 (hose) 930 207 237 02 (support bracket) and 930 207 235 01 (hose)

Its possible that the valve got superceded again to the "02". Its been quite some time since I have had to update one of those. I think the hose is tapered. It wouldn't hurt to try and use the old hoses. The bracket is a must though.
