Fan strap

I have painted all my tinware, fan... and I am reassembling, but I ran into a wall. How do I get the fan strap back through the guides. I remember muscling it in the first place but I don't think that will work. Maybe removing the distributor will help?

Thanks,
Pat

I'm not sure I know what you're talking about. What fan strap? The fan belt?

Pat,

You can replace the fan strap without removing the distributor.

Its a major PITA regardless of whether the distributor is in or out, but liberally grease both the strap and the two slots in the case at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions and work slowly and deliberately.

Occasional cursing, and beer breaks while you stare at the #@%! car and question why you ever started this project will most likely be required as well. These, however, will pass.

In any event, while it may not look like it, the strap can be coaxed through those two slots.

Good luck,
Tim

Pat,

It is a major pain, and even though I greased mine, I still scratched my new powder coating getting back in!!!!!
Just take your time and go from the AC side toward the dizzy. You have to bend it as you go to get around the Dizzy.

Good luck

It's a hassle. Bend it a tad, force it, swear when you see the great paint job you just did go to hell. Swear some more, bend more, get real aggressive until it finally makes its way through. Then sit back and wonder why you just spent the time to take it out and paint it in the first place.

What toblu said is right on the money. I would never powder coat the strap. Paint it and then touch up the scratches after you get the strap back in.

Start with a longer than stock bolt. Run it down to tighten up the strap. Then you can tighten down the other stock bolt, remove the long one and finish up with the 2nd stock bolt.
