Who has Disassembled the Handbrake Lever?

I'm currently taking my handbrake lever apart for repainting/replating and am trying to figure out how part 901.424.511.00 is removed. It is a "bolt" that attaches the "pawl" to the lever and allows the pawl to pivot. The bolt in question is shown in red in the diagram below. I don't think there are any threads in there and there are 2 small dimples on one end - is this where it has just been "peened" in place? Thanks.

You should be able to do what you want without removing it. The pivot is pressed into the pawl. The body of the hand brake is pressed after the pawl and pivot are put into place.
Like closing a Pita Sandwich.

You could try punching it out but I wouldn't.

If you have to mess with it... Grind or cut it out and then replace it with a bolt but you may have to weld that bolt to the pawl or the the bolt to the handle.

Thanks. I ended up removing it. I had to grind the head off and it seems to be some sort of solid rivet.

So what's the plan? A new bolt or are you reusing the solid rivet?

The replacement rivet is $3 from Porsche, so I'll pick one of those up and see if I can figure out how to set it. Else I will just use a bolt instead.

I think you did the right thing give the time you will have invested in refreshing the assembly.

I wonder if the factory manual would have any info on how to peen it back into place. Porsche had to have bought it as an assembly so maybe not.

Hi Ferrino - any progress? I'm following this thread with interest as I'm about to embark on the same effort to disassemble for powder coating. Surprisingly, haven't been able to find much about this using the search function and google. Thanks

I've media-blasted the components but it will be a while before I reassemble as I am accumulating parts for a large zinc plating batch... I am going to order the cheap factory "bolt", but I spoke to a fellow Pelican who came up with a more reversible solution, which was to insert a small tube as the pivot, which is threaded on the inside. It is then fastened from the other side using a small dome-head bolt. It will probably require the pawl to have the hole enlarged slightly. I might do that instead as I prefer threaded fasteners to rivets.

Credit to Roland (proffighter). Here is his restored handbrake lever with reversible "pawl pivot":

I'm embarking on this same mission. Does anyone have any tips on how to remove the plastic handbrake lever grip (901-424-521-01)? I've tried driving it off like the throttle & heater lever knobs and heating it up with a hot air gun without success.
Thanks,
Tony

The plastic handle sleeve is a tight fit. I don't remember if I drove it off or cut it off when I restored my handbrake assembly, but I remember that it was damaged in the process and I replaced it with a new one.

The PO had glued mine so needless to say, removal required the nuclear option - thus it will be replaced.

Cheers
