Just about finished with mine from Griff. Great instructions and complete kit. Very well done replacement pieces. A neighbor's garage lift was a huge help. Last steps are hoses and charging. I replaced the entire system. Highly recommend calling Griif before starting out.

How long did it take you? and how much did you have to swap out to get the desired result?

Thanks -I plan on calling him this week, there is a lot of info I need to ensure it's done right and get his guidance.

It's actually not that crazy, and his instructions are great. It's a long dirty task. I did it over two days, working maybe 8 hours a day? But I'm an idiot, and I was on my back under the car (jackstands were as high as it got). But it's unscrewing nuts, taking things off, and putting new versions of those things back in. Toughest part was assembling the smuggler's box apparatus and running one line through the trunk. Rest was unbolt, detach, attach, tighten bolts. Get some good music and some good beer and you're all set.

I called Mr Griffith and had a nice chat with him and went over what my car is and where I need to be to achieve the desired results that I want-I submitted his survey about my car and awaiting his feedback. will keep you posted

As a few others here have mentioned, ol' Griff can't be matched for technical support - and not just support follow-up after purchasing his products; I have gotten help and a/c tech clarification from him, in private and without even asking for it, on numerous occasions and I have never bought a thing from him (and he wasn't trying to make a sale as he was well aware that I had DIY, built a meat locker system prior to ever hearing about him or his company).

I installed mine over a weekend. Long dirty process, but well worth it. I highly recommend Griffiths.

I called Griffith's yesterday and received the data that I needed. I will go forward and purchase the system and a few options....On expectation management Griffiths was the only responsive and a lot of good feedback, good technical support and something that does not require a Phd from MIT to install...at this point I plan to do it myself.

I've got about 7 hours into it and ready to do all the hoses. But I had a lift and a couple of buddies helping. That doesn't include some prep work and reading the instructions.

I had my local independent install a full Griffiths package last year, including two condensers in the left rear fender well in my 79 Turbo.

Not cheap, but "When you buy quality, you only cry once."

Griffiths complete unit in my 78 930. evaporator, condensers, hoses, extra condeser in the left wheel well, switches, extra under dash vents - everything! Excellent quality, great installation instructions, and a very clean look. Everything came very well packed - and was shipped fairly quickly.
I stronly recommend Griffiths for A/C

It’ll be interesting to find out how the Classic Retrofit kit compares once it’s been installed and tested in southern cars. I like the idea of cleaning up the engine bay, but obviously the performance of the system is most important.

Concur, but it's too early to see how this will pan out---I like the idea, but with summer approaching, I have to have a system in now before they fully ramp up and get feedback and improvements from those that suffer in the most extreme temps. But I like everything about it.

Full Griffith's back in 2008 on my 1988 Cab. Still going strong!

I agree it will be interesting, but honestly, unless you want to be on the "bleeding edge," it will be five years before we know if their kit is any good. It will take that long before their installations have been made in sufficient numbers to have enough data points...besides, we know nothing about the longevity of their product.

Don't get me wrong, the Classic Retrofit kit sounds very encouraging, but if you want a modern-performing AC system in an air-cooled Porsche (993s excluded), and you want it NOW, Griffith is the only way to go.

Hardly 'bleeding edge'. Tesla, Prius and other EV and hybrid cars have been using electric compressors in automotive for years already. Most truck top and RV A/C systems are electric too. The majority of these systems use the exact same compressor as we do.

Scroll compressors are highly reliable, more so than plate or piston types used in conventional engine driven units. It has no clutch either so is likely to outlast a standard AC compressor.

By the time the compressor has failed we'll be using magneto caloric heat pumps for AC and heat anyway. That will give us a COP of 5 and will be another game changer.

Canada Kev 02-28-2018 04:13 PM

By bleeding edge, I would interpret that as your whole system, Johnny. There may be others using the same compressor, but the integration of that with the rest of your kit and our 911s is largely undocumented. As well, you are/were having your own sourcing issues which may possibly now be rectified.

I'm sure that in the end, Classic AC will turn out to be a great upgrade, but I have yet to read a single report from users here in North America. When there are sufficient users extolling its virtue in the heat and humidity soaked regions or the world, and the teething issues of mass utilization are solved, I expect the skeptics will quiet down.

I'm personally holding off and waiting to hear some positive news from installations 'in the wild' before I decide which path I'll take. For a few months, anyway...
