Doing it right is a broad area.

Remember that paint jobs are mostly labor, and more labor!

Good paint, primer, masking materials, tape etc can run $1000 and more.

I feel a decent paint job with windows out is $5k to $10k

I have done a 1973 911 and recently a Boxster.

There is a lot to consider.

Are you going to change the color?

Bare metal re-spray or scuff up what's there and paint?

Has the car ever been repainted?

Do you need to paint the door jambs, inside the trunk, etc?

Are you doing any work yourself?

What if the rust is way worse than you thought? Most of these cars rust from the inside out.

What quality of paint do you want? Glassurit or Sherwoodwilliams?

are you just dropping the car off for paint, or are you disassembling and prepping the car? color change? painting wheel wells, trunk, engine compartment? driver quality or high end? body work?

depending on answers to these questions, anywhere from $5-30K+. more if there is any metal work/rust....

The solid reality of California is that the (retail) cost of materials to paint an entire car is going to be around $5000. The price of the chemicals (paints, thinners, activators, etc.) has sky-rocketed in the last 10 years.

I am paying my brother 10g to do all my paint and body work, plus he helps with assembly. He is a pro, and has done many award winning show cars that have been in magazines. Qaulity materials are going to set you back min. 2g. and prolly more. (from sand paper to paint) He takes them down to the bare bones. Lots of hrs. I feel its a bargain once you see the hrs put in for a correct paint job.

I had my blue Targa repainted, widebody, done by a 40+ year award winning painter, show quality, SoCal - $18,000

Brought him a bare tub, would have been more if he would have had to disassemble.

Estimate is 8-10K for my '69 Coupe. Still in the shop. I pulled doors apart, pulled fenders, bumpers and interior myself.

Rust included replacing 1/2 a floor, redoing a botched front pan, both rockers and small hole under battery.....Guy has taken over 80 pictures as he works....Most of work is done by his helper and he bills me 1/2 price on that.....Sheet metal work is done and media blast this week........I've paid him 2K in installments so far.....

I bet that in the SF Bay Area, a top notch, glass-out, job will top a whopping $25k.

If the paint is original, I would just keep it as is, with minor preservation corrections, rock chips et al. 'Preservation class' is in, and it shows character. A new paint job will get nicked in no time.

I charge approx $15k to paint a new car. This is what it pencils out to at about $65/hr. An older car with repairs and additional labor only goes up from there

Let's see for just a quick reality check for materials cost…. If going to bare metal and doing it yourself assuming you have a primer gun and a good spray gun or other wise add $ 600 to the bottom line totals and add about
$ 1,200 for a good used real 5 h.p. 12 to 17 cfm compressor with at least 65 gallon tank if you do not already have one plus add for hobby breathable fresh air supply unit $ 360 plus paint suit and hood $ 150 and $ 24.84 for pain relievers :

Now for the basics:

Sand Paper Stock Pile of all types and sizes @ $ 1.00/sheet …. $ 200
Aircraft paint stripper … $ 100
SPI ( Souther Polyurethanes, Inc ) epoxy primer …. $ 300 for 2 gallons
H.O.K. ( House of Kolor ) urethane high build primer … $ 250 for 1 gallon plus qt
Single Stage Urethane 1-gallon plus qt $ 300 to $ 650 depending on mfr flavor chosen
or
Base Coat/Clear Coat … 2-gallons plut qt $400- $ 800 depending on mfr flavor chosen
Cutting & Buffing Suplies …. $ 200
Tarps and Booth Creation …. $ 250
Painting Jack Stands …. $ 350
Exhaust Fan System/Ventilation/Filtration …. $ 650
Miscellaneous: Rage filler, 3M Top Fairing Putty Cream, …. plus crap n crap ….. $ 450

Guest-a-mat Amount : $ 3k to 4k or so ….. less if your squeaky … more if your leaky - uncle dave

Beautiful paint job. But your post really doesn't help the original poster at all. Unless you want to let him know what you paid.

Full, glass-out single stage bare metal repaint w/ Glasurit 22 Line; minor rust (mostly under Targa glass) and body repair a few years agoŚ▒$15K. That doesn't include new/refinished metal trim and all rubber seals...

Post before mine gave a spread of 5-30k, my reply was to the high side. To disassemble, strip to bare metal, small amount of body repairs, primer and paint, reassemble with all new seals, new headliner, some mechanical work on wiring and shipping was about $40k.

Can't really say with 100% certainty what just the paint job cost.

Paint is the cheap part, it's the 200+ hours of labor that crank up the price.
Prep is everything and the price of the paintjob is directly tied to the hours spent on prep. The difference between a $10K paint and a $40K paint is Earl Shiebs vs Concourse. You need to decide where you want to be in it and how long you want it to last before it starts bubbling up or flaking off.
