Short Shift Kit
While rooting around in the garage, I found a short shift kit that I apparently bought years ago. I’m trying to remember why I never installed it. I seem to recall that I read they were hard on the trans, or maybe it was that my car had a 4 speed. Can’t remember.
It’s the Porsche kit 911.424.931.00. Should I resurrect this project? |

I’ve heard they’re great when paired with a Siene gate kit.. If you back out, I’ll make you an offer for it

I also have one ,that I have not installed ,yet.
The reason is, that after I installed the seine gate shifter, It made a significant difference(imo)in the shifing :better feel due to the spring loaded gate mechanism ,maybe more precise, smother rowing thru the gears (except down to first) so I didn't feel the need to install the short shifter . Haven't answered your question, but I would recommend the siene shifter before installing the short shifter .(imo) Theres no need to rush the 915 shifts from gear to gear...enjoy the rev range.

if that is the factory short shift, I installed one in my 85 911 along with the seine. think that was standard in 87. I felt the combination was a big overall improvement, especially the seine had the biggest impact. love how it always centers in the 3-4 slot. much easier to feel the gates when shifting.
I'll be doing a wevo system on my 930 conversion project in process.

I have been told by Mayo that the Porsche (SCRS) short shifter is acceptable but still imparts more stress on the synchros simply by the increased speed of engagement. As they get more "short" the stress increases. Mind you, that's one dude talking to me.

The factory short shift kit only reduces the throw about 20%. Enough so you are not hitting your knuckles on the open ash tray.
IMO that will not affect the life of the synchros. The effort to shift is slightly higher due to having less leverage. That would off set the force on the transmission parts. On my old 901 trans, I had TWO short shift kits. The force needed to make a shift was noticeably more than stock. But the feeling was one of a direct connection to the trans. I ran this way for 20 years and never hurt the synchros even though I autocrossed regularity. Now with my 915, I am running the factory short shifter with the Seine gate setup. Works great and no issues.

My car (915 trans) came with a weltmeister (sp?) shift kit installed. It was total garbage. It was hard shifting and caused a few mis shifts.
I had the tranny rebuilt and told my shop to throw in an OEM shifter they had laying around. I could care less what they did with that POS shifter but in my opinion the factory shifter is perfect. |
