Clunking When I turn Hard Right
Check to make sure it wasn't a sway bar mount. I figure it's a CV joint. My question is, inner or outer and how do you tell?
Eric |
Repetitive knocking that sounds like a horse on cobblestone would be a CV joint. The balls get dry and divot the inner and outer races and there's nothing you can do with them but replace the axle assembly.
|
John,
I would normally replace the whole axle but I just happen to have a brand new CV joint and was wondering how you can tell which (inner or outer) cv is bad. |
Remove the axle, remove the cvs, disassemble them and wash clean. Look for divots in the races, find all cvs are toast, throw in trash, buy complete new axles. They're all shot by now, considering their age/mileage.
|
If you jack up the car and grab the axle and rotate / wiggle it around, you might be able to isolate the offending CV. But ultimately you will be following John's advice. Those CVs need some greasing from time to time.
