Fresh Air Blower Controls
What are the correct settings to have it off? Someone moved one of the levers in my car. I noticed it when I smelled something, I think I have a burnt wire. I moved it to where I think it was and the burnt smell stopped. Also If I pull the fuse to the fresh air blower will this stop the wires from being active if someone moves a lever. What is involved in dealing with a burnt wire? Thanks in advance

Credit to IMcarthur for this pic.
![]() Sry, I can't answer your fuse question off-hand - hopefully someone else can chime in.

It's all the way left on all levers. I believe pulling the fuse will disable the fan speed lever from actuating the fan. Also make sure auto heat controller is in the "off" position. See picture above.

I did have that picture printed out, but I can't find the thread I printed it from. I do have the heater off and the all the levers to the left except the air fan speed that was always to the right and that was the lever that was moved. I was driving in traffic when this all happened.
I smelled something burning and then I noticed the air fan speed lever has been moved and the top right snowflake looking symbol was lit. I moved the lever back to the right and the smell dissipated and the snowflake light was now off. So my main concern is the burning smell because I'm sure it was one of the wires. Searching burnt doesn't bring up much information. And searching smoke brings up mostly exhaust threads.

The picture is in several threads, it is also from Ian Mcarthurs rennlist website: https://members.rennlist.com/imcarthur/911autoheat.htm
Is it possible that you smelled the actual motor going bad? As an example, I smoked my evap fan blower (in the smugglers box) the day I bought the car - simply by turning it on. Motor seized and I eventually ditched my AC. I was running the AC on my drive home when I smelled it and the cabin filled with smoke, although yours could be some wires someplace, perhaps to a motor if it was getting ready to seize is my suggestion for the increased load and current demand needed to cook wires. The only thing I can suggest would be to try to quickly check it for smooth operation, you may be able to do this quickly enough before the wires overheat to the point of burning. Other than that, trace and inspect the wires, look for burn through of the insulation and sleeving - obvious stuff. If you smelled it, hopefully the burn will be obvious. HTH

Best picture ever!! Have owned older 911's for 20 years and never fully understood all the climate control levers. I assume the two levers between the seats control the heat boxes on the left and right side (on the 89).

Thanks for the replies. I'm hoping it's the motor and not the wires. I will be pulling the fuse out for the motor before I use the car again.
