Undercoating Opinions
Looking for opinions on Wurth Stone Guard for undercoating...
Is picking up a few cans of the aerosol just fine? Or should I spend the money on an SKS gun and do the legwork of finding someone who sells the Stone guard in the 1000 ml cans? Seems like I won’t use the gun again... but that factory look sure is sweet ![]() |

First thing is the rattle can is not the same product as was applied to your car originally. It is junk. It will not match texture or color. What ever you do, do not use the rattle can product you will regret it. Second, the original formula Wurth is no longer available it was discontinued several years ago. Those that may have a few cans I am sure will not part with it. The original solvent based product which was somewhat rubbery when dry and beige in color was replaced by a water based formula. Shutz guns are inexpensive about $25.00.
You will need to tint a substitute product that is available on the market in order to get a match to the original color, texture, consistency. I performed some tests a few years ago that you may find helpful. Here are the links. Shutz color match Gas tank coating Overall I was happy with the end result. The only negative in the Upol was it dried hard as opposed to the original formula which was rubbery/pliable when dry. I may try testing the 3M product sometime in the future. Good luck and do not use the rattle can stuff. |

Your local BASF jobber should have UPOL's line at least my local one does. Gun $20 on Amazon unless you want the adjustable nozzle version. Set at 60psi, lots of discussion what to tint with I think enamel will work. I did my Golf cart in upol raptor bedliner and tinted it with urethane. I can't see the chipgaurd and the bedliner being that different in composition but I guess they are. Anyway I'm really happy with upol products and highly recommend it. I think upol also makes it for sem and Wurth as well.

At 60 psi you can't go wrong. You will put down a nice pebbly finish. Sure, practice on a piece of something or other, but the gun is pretty simple and foolproof. You can also use the same gun for applying fluid film or cosmoline to the bottom of any car for rust abatement. I mix nothing with mine. I paint over.
