Question Targa owners - how do you store/transport your top?

Curious as to how others deal with their top when its not on the car? I generally leave mine off, in the garage, unfolded sitting on top of a pair of old tennis shoes (similar to suggestion in the owners manual on handling of the Targa top so as to not scratch it.)

Another Targa owner said he never folds his top, so that lasts longer and doesn't crack.

What do the rest of you do?

90% of the time i fold it up and put it in the front trunk area. when i put it back on there are slight creases where it was folded, but they go away when it warms up.

i have gone on short trips with it in the garage.

Always kept it folded and in the front trunk, but then I used my 72 E as a daily driver, rain or shine.

I fold mine up and put it on the back "shelf" (seats folded down).

Now, however, I've got cracks in the vinyl right along the fold lines.

My Targa is a daily driver so wether the top goes in the truck or remains open in the garage depends on where I'm going. When I go into questionable parts of so cal., like LA, I fold it and store in the trunk so I can put it on if needed. Granted, the top would be in better condition if stored open all the time, but it would need replacement after a period of time anyways.

99% of the time when I drive my car, the top is off. When I'mm driving the car, top sits unfolded upside down on my car cover on top of the workbench. When the car is in the garage and not being driven I just lay it on top of the car with out latcheting it down.

Mine fits unfolded in my front trunk. doesn't anybody else do that or is my front trunk blatantly missing big things?

only way for mine to fit in the front trunk would be folded - which is why I've not done it.

Unfolded in the garage. I pretty much only use it when weather indicates. Otherwise I carry a small technalon cover with me just in case of a surprise shower - it is sized to fit only around the cockpit with velcro straps made to attach to side mirrors and wiper arms. I store this cover behind the seat in a plastic bag when not in use.

I never fold the top, having seen the damage this does. But this is idiocy because, for God's sake, what did I buy an open-air car for anyway? There are times where I could go without the top but don't (Seattle) just due to the bending of the front bead and the inevitable stretch and flareup that results from that action.

It's probably because I replaced my own top and that was a fairly intensive effort. You'd think that, now that I know how, it would be no big deal, but...

Cool

I'm such a whitey that I have no clue why I bought two open (targa) cars! I get sunburned in about 10 minutes w/o hardcore sunscreen & hat.

When I run the 911 topless, which isn't very often, I almost always just leave the top at home, unfolded.

90% of the time I fold mine and put it on the back shelf. The rest of the time I keep it unfolded stuck behind the seats. Either way is not a problem but you cannot get to the back shelf when its not folded.

I do not like to leave the top folded for a long period of time due to the creases in the vinyl. The older the vinyl is, the more of a chance you have on its cracking and I am not interested in recovering mine anytime soon!

I also store mine in the garage unfolded unless its too cold out for going topless.
My little black beauty only gets wet when I wash it.

A new question?

What does everyones targa top look like at 120 mph? I sense that mine 'puffs up' from either small pinholes in the seam or from the lifting effect of the air going over the top of the car - or both?

Living in So Cal, I leave mine unfolded and hung on the wall by some of those J hooks you can get at Home Depot. It keeps it out of the way and in good shape.

My car is a daily driver that spends most of the time with the top off
. I find the squeaks and rattles from the top more annoying than the wind noise with the top off. Fortunately, it never really gets cold enough here (California) that the heater can’t keep up.

As for how I treat the top, usually the top goes folded into the front. Often I drive home topless, park the car in the garage (top in the trunk) and then drive to work the same way. When I get to work the top is put on, and then taken off of the ride home.

If I take the top off at a light, it usually goes into the passenger seat (unless for some reason the kid seat is out of the back, then it goes there).

The previous owner was paranoid about “ruining” the top so he used to put it behind the seats unfolded. The only problem there is the interior at the base of the car (where the rear panels meet the doors) is trashed from the abuse. I think I’d rather redo the top than the interior.

I would always fold mine and stick it in the trunk. Sometimes behind the seats.

Behind the seats isnt good though, I reckon as you can easily scuff or rip the leather.

The dumbest thing I ever did was let the top slip out of my hands whilst folding it. I dont know how. It then fell against the car and the corner of the top gouged a nice big scratch down the rear. I had to have the whole panel re-sprayed.

Also its so easy to replace the top that I never worried about any rips.

I don't get to go topless as much as I would like, but when I do I take the top off while sitting in the driver's seat and put it behind the seats unfolded, Then when I put it back I again do it from the normal seated position in the driver's seat. I have on occasion folded it and put it in the front, and also put it up fron unfolded. My car cover is usually up there so it's easier folded.
It's not cheap to have someone else cover your top, but how long will they last if they are folded and unfolded from time to time. I think it should be quite some time, so I'm not too worried about it.
