915 main shaft seal & Speedi-Sleeve

I'm about to wrap up my transmission rebuild and install the guide tube with new seal for my 1983 SC with 915/64.

I used the Elring gasket/seal kit and SKF Speedi-Sleeve from our host, and installed the sleeve while the input shaft was out and easily accessible. Figured a new surface would be better than depending on a worn groove. I pushed the sleeve on far enough to straddle the old wear mark, removed the installation flange, and finished the build. I planned to install the new seal so the lip was centered on the sleeve.

BUT....my seal has two sets of lips, and I can get the inner lip centered on the sleeve, but the outer lip has no shaft surface to contact. If I push the seal into the tube far enough to put the outer lip on the sleeve, then I will be in too far in the tube.

Should I ignore the seal outer lip and depend on the inner lip to do the job? I have not measured depths exactly yet, but even without the sleeve to worry about, I doubt I can get both lips to contact the shaft and still be located correctly in the tube.

Can I get by with only one set of lips preventing leaks or do I need to push the seal in a lot further? Is there another single lip seal that would be better? Thoughts?

Rick

Your seal has an oil seal and a dust seal.
The oil seal has a spring internal and dust seal does not have.
Make sure the oil seal is centered on the speedi-sleeve and you are ok.

Perhaps the double lip seal is generic and is meant for many different applications?

I don't remember my old seal having two lips, but maybe I just didn't notice. In my current situation, the dust lip will be positioned over the smaller diameter of the input shaft, and not touching anything.

Other than going to a different design seal, I guess I have no choice but to depend on the main "inner" lip to hold back gear oil. That should be no worse than using a single lip seal!

Thanks for your help, Daugaard.
