No ebrake by choice

I live in Florida so it’s pretty flat. Anyway, I have been building a lightweight backdate trying for sub 2k. So as another option I’m thinking of deleting the whole ebrake system. Just seeing if any others have done it and weather it is a good idea. I always leave the car in gear when I park anyways. And yes every ounce matters!

I don't know if it is required but it will never pass vehicle inspection. At least not any where I have lived.

BTW it's not just a parking brake....it's also an emergency brake.

I did it on my track rat.
Then decided I wanted to drive the car on the street more, and no brake was an inconvenience.
Sometimes I had the car running and wanted to jump out for something.
Always carried a 2*4 brake!
Not sure it was really worth the minor gains, doubt I really noticed it.

Relying on compression to hold a parked car is not good. Try turning the engine over with a wrench, against compression and see how easy you can overcome the compression. The car weighs a lot more than that effort.

On my car I always set the parking brake because when the engine turns backwards it collapses the tensioners and i get horrible noses for about 5 minutes till they pump up again. So just be carefull to leave it in a gear that wont turn the engine the wrong way. Its illegal in most states but florida doesnt have inspections right? If you have to carry a chock your gaining that weight right back again

I live in JAX. My Rat Rod does not have one. I plan to put one in at some point. Only place its tough here is when I pull it up to a valet, it may roll if I don't shut it off. The bigger issue for me is the look on the valets face, "you want me to park THAT POS?"

I have no e-brake because I out in Rebel Racings 4" Tunnel Riser, so I need to trim back the tubes the cables run in. Just not gotten to it yet. I want to the the car open road trips to places like the hills in Ga, for the great roads. I will want one there for sure!

Really, of all things...the e-brake!?

I'm all for stripping as much as possible out of the car, mine has no heat/air/radio etc...but the e-brake.

I agree with Lake....YOU lose 5lbs and enjoy the safety of the e-brake

Yeah, I can see the annoyance of that. I had a cobra that I forgot to take the ebrake off of and drove about 1 mile. Funny how 550ft/lbs of torque will make a ebrake feel like nothing. I had to adjust it later that week .... but it made it a real PITA to drive around town. Stopping the engine and leaving it in gear, etc.

I would be concerned about the legality of it ... not from the inspection part but if you were in an accident and they found you liable due to not have a functional ebrake. That part would make it a no go for me.

Well 15 years ago when I was going thru a weight reduction program on my 72 911 I took my ebrake out. At the time I was living in Florida, I now live in Oregon. The weight is at the rear of the car so it seemed like a good deal. I also took it out of my 65 Corvette. I always leave the cars in gear when I get out and in an emergency I suppose I could just turn off the key.

The slope is not slippery; in fact it is entirely frictionless.

I have a big car shaped hole in my fence where my neighbour didn’t set the ebrake properly. He has a fence shaped impact on his car.

Don’t recommend removing it.

I was out for a walk and saw a car parked on incline driveway not running and in gear to hold it. As I got closer, one chug, two, three and away it went down the driveway and across the road into the tree. The engine compression had been overcome by the incline. That being said, it's also the inconvenience of not being able to safely get out while it is running that gets my vote to keep it.

Ok,ok I guess not the best idea but do you guys really know how hard it is to get into sub 2k. I’m 160lbs and 5’ 11” so losing 5 more lbs isn’t much. I’ve done everything possible to Lighten the car and this was just one more thing on the list.

I think there was somebody on this site years ago that happend to their 911. Down the driveway and into a ditch and messed up the suspension. I know many inspectors that dont check the parking brake even though its required because they often get stuck on and then have to fix it at no charge.
