wheel polishing question
1987 carrera,
I would like to polish my MLS OZ wheels (see picture). They have very small imperfections such as tiny pits and scratches (not deep). The wheels are the original wheels on the car and were never sent out to be refurbished. I wonder if someone knows if such wheels were originally anodized...AND IF THEY ARE ANODIZED, any suggestion as to polishing them with a metal compound polish. Any experience or suggestions are greatly appreciated ![]() |

I don’t know these rims, but regarding polishing you could address these with a common polish for alloy e.g. Nevrdull or Autosol, then wipe with a ceramic sealant.

May want to do a search on polishing annodized wheels. If they are in fact annodized, you don't want to use a compound unless you want to remove the anodizing and end up with polished wheels.

I had a Fuch wheel that had some small pitting in the polished surface. Fuchs are anodized and the only way to remove the pits was to remove the anodizing and do some serious polishing. I left those wheels polished and they look great without being re-anodized.
As stated you need to be cautious about trying to polish them if they are anodized or clear coated. If you want to check for anodizing, you could take some "mag" wheel polish, like Mothers or Semichrome, and work on a small area lightly. If the rag turns black, your wheels are not coated or anodized. Do not use chrome polish.

ive polished a number of different wheels over the years and I suggest the polish that comes in like a stick form (lip stick like) and a couple different pad types on a 4" grinder. the pads ive found that work the best is a rigid type disk that is sewn around the circumference every 1/4" or so, then one of the floppy type that has more give to it to get in the tighter places. start with the stiff cloth one and get all you can, them move to the softer one for the final polishing and getting in the nooks the stiffer one could not get to. keep the cloth pads moist with a fern sprayer as you go, apply the compound to the cloth wheels while running the grinder.
it's messy as the compound is flung everywhere, but the water helps keeping the dust down. could not find any shots of the fuchs or BBS wheels ive done, but here is a polished wheel from my old 996TT I owned at one time. ![]()
