Valeo alternator adaptation
 
I hope someone can help me. I just started to replace the alternator in my 78 SC. I purchased a Valeo unit to replace the ailing Marchal. Whoa! not as many terminals!!! Is there an adapter kit or something to help all those seemingly errant wires find a home. Any help would be appreciated. I'm getting my wife's keyboard filthy, there's a big hole in my car and boy am I sad (okay, confused).

I put one of these Valeos in my '76 last summer while on a road trip. Does the alternator you have contain an internal (built-in) volatge regulator? If it does you will need to either modify the hub or nozzle that attaches to the back of the alternator or get the update kit that Porsche sells. The kit also contains the resistor that you will likely need if you are upgrading to an alternator with an internal voltage regulator. This resistor kit comes with clips that allow it to be placed across (in parallel with) the alternator light on the oil pressure gage. Also Valeo has been known to change the nut and pulley clamping washer on the alternator. Sometimes the new nut requires a 24 mm socket or wrench. What came with your alternator? Jim

This unit does have an internal regulator. It also came with a resistor and a clip. I guess what I really need is a schematic, drawing or just someone to tell me exactly where everything should go!

Early_S_man in the above has posted the tech bulletin from Porsche on this; it covers the wiring changes. Also, the Valeo alternator should have come with a wiring information sheet (mine did) however I found it not very useful. Jim

Did the tech bulletin answer your wiring questions? If you did not get the updated hub extension you can modify your original one with a little saw and dremel tool bits. I found that the small (10 mm?) combination wrench in the small metric Sears ignition wrench set works very well for tightening the small nuts that hold the hub extension to back of the alternator. Some of them have to be put in place working behind with the alternator already in the shroud. Take your time and avoid dropping the small wave washers and nuts! Also check to ensure that there is a ground strap between the alternator and the engine case (see the tech bulletin); some of the early 78's (?) came from the factory without these ground straps and they should be added or an equivalent made and added.
