911T Case Differences '72 vs '73
 

Hi All,

My 72 911T Coupe came with two long blocks: '72 911T case (serial number 6123160) and '73 (6130564). The '72 long block is not the matching numbers engine to by coupe. Both engine cases are stamped 911/51 and have 901.101.101.5R/901.101.102.4R case halves and appear to be in good condition.

I plan to rebuild one, so my question is which one?. I searched Pelican and did not find any differences added by Porsche between these two engines, so I assume from a structural perspective they are the same. If they are in both the same condition (yeah I know a big assumption), Is one long block better to rebuild than the other?

Should be the same. The next iteration was the 7R which was 73.5 year 2.4s. If one was a 7R that would be the one I would use, but it appears not to be if they have the castings you listed. Have a porsche machine shop look at them and see if they have a favorite of the two.

I agree, and you confirmed that '72 and '73 had the same cases.

If both cases check out, then I'll probably keep the '72. It will be at least the same year as my Coupe.

Another thought is to throw out those case numbers to the registry to see if someone is looking for there orig engine. Selling off that right case to the right person might pay for the lions share of your project.

Only if you charge a king’s ransom to the guy to release the case. I’ve had a T case FS for months at $1100 with no bites. You might be able to get a bit of a “finders few” for helping someone out but only dick charges $5k or $10k just because it’s the one and only numbers matching case for a car.

I agree with what Matt said. Thats a fine line you must navigate. Holding a guy over the barrel is a dick move but getting a fair price isnt. How much extra does the right case add to the value of a car? If someone had a #s matching car they would want a premium for it just because of that. That is one of the thing that bothers me about the pcar ... not the regular guys but I see it more with the "investment flippers" and the porsche tax.

Selling a case for ransom for $5-$10k is absurd. I would love to see these cases reunited with their originals cars. If someone did come forward, then I would sell it for the same cost as Matt is selling his case for.
