Ducktail with appearance grade carbon fiber
Hi All,
Well, I had a fun weekend, and as a result I can't English properly. Please forgive any general stupidity in this post and adjust upwards when judging my normal level of intelligence. I'm interested in putting a ducktail on my 87 Carrera Coupe. I think it would be cool to go with appearance grade carbon fiber. It would go nicely on my black coupe, I think. I'm not interested in cf appearance only-- Needs to be a genuinely lighter piece made of carbon fiber. I am also planning to preserve my stock decklid so I (or a future owner) can go back to stock. Do ducktails get sold as part of a decklid? I can't tell for sure. From searching around, I see that Getty Design is recommended for the best fitment. Do they or anyone else make a ducktail in CF? Anyone else besides Getty that have good fitment? Many thanks. T |

if you want the clear carbon look
be sure it has UV blockers in the top coat or the epox will sun degrade quickly even with UV blockers the epox will degrade over time |

The Stratton ducktail is fused to a stock steel decklid/frame, so you won't get the lightness. Every ducktail I've seen has been one-piece with the decklid, regardless of material. Getty makes good stuff by all accounts, though I do not know what the weight savings of carbon fiber is over the fiberglass/FRP. I would be interested to know...I'm also curious if the CF is smooth or has a texture from the weave, so if you find out in your travels...
Can you "adjust" CF the way you can (must) fiberglass? Last edited by Tremelune; 03-26-2018 at 04:48 PM.. |

I've just taken receipt of some amazing Getty parts.
Two front fenders with metal bowls, a long hood and front and rear bumpers. The quality is right up there. Sorry I can't comment on their ducktails - I went for an alloy engine lid, but the hood which has been test fitted is a dream! I knew they were going to be good, when I placed both the front and the rear bumpers on a flat surface and there was next to zero daylight coming out from underneath them. Some pics of the parts and packing here: '75 build (time) to infinity... and beyond!

I've always wondered about fitting CF components. Typical response of people installing fiberglass parts is that they don't fit and require a bit a massaging. I don't know why CF would be different since they both depend on a well designed mold and manufacturing process to control shrink so the end product is the right dimension and shape. If CF suffers from the same dimensional deviations as fiberglass, then how do you fit it without destroying the cosmetic impact of naked CF.
While UV protection is important, the number of days of exposure in Seattle is limited.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I've been trying to reach Getty by phone for a couple of days, but no one's picking up. I will keep trying-- maybe they're taking a few days off or something.
I will call Stratton and see what he says. Cheers. T |
