HELP - SWB 911 Front Indicator Lens Install
 

Hi All

I am doing some body work and repainting my 1967 911 and I want to change my front indicator lenses as they are faded. I got new ones from here and they look so much better.

The trouble is how to install them. 2 things that concern me. First is the (I dont know the name of these things) aluminium rivets (see photo with new lens) and second is the melting part of the lens itself.

Q1. With the rivets to get the old ones out I assume the best method is to drill the back. Is this correct?

Q2. How to I secure the new ones in place? They obviously slot into the lens at the front but how do I spread them at the back? I dont really want to take a hammer to it :)

Q3. What is the best method to melt the tabs on the back of the lens? Is it a soldering iron (I assume this could get sticky/stinky)?

If you just use the tabs the lenses will not be water tight.in my experience don't worry too much about the tabs just silicone the lense to the housing.
The rivets help to stop the fixing screws pull through the plastic.

There was a good tech thread on this on the 912 registry (as I recall) but I can't find it, as I just wanted to refer you there.

Get the lenses warm, use a good silicone, and use "C" clamps like you would for a glueing wood together. Obviously use rags/cloths as buffers so you don't scratch. I suppose that once clamped together you could heat the tabs, but I haven't seen anyone do that yet. The ones I had didn't have the tabs, so we could only silicone glue them.

When I got mine, they had two piece "ferrules", not single. You're still going to have to put those in though so that the screws have something to go through.

Edit: This might be it, but I recall seeing some "clamped" lenses...

Thanks 9er and Soterik for the tips - I greatly appreciate your help. I think you are right on the sealant and no need for melting the tabs. Also I guess the ferrules dont have to be flanged on the other side.
