				Vacuum question

I have been finding and fixing vacuum leaks on my Carrera and I recently bought this air tube part that you see that goes in the back of the engine compartment. It is brand new. My problem is that no matter how carefully I place the hose clamp, or how much I tighten it or tighten it less, I still get a leak and the motor revved when I spray engine starter fluid where it connects to the receiving metal pipe. Can anybody recommend a solution? Some kind of tape maybe? Know the metal tube it goes on has a slight lip. I put the hose clamp behind the lip to get a good seal. Thanks for your input. | ||

Are you saying it leaks at the crimped ferrule? Can you remove and test it for leaks on a bench? How confident are you that it isn't over spray going into something else (like a leaky adjacent line)? Self fusing silicone tape works well on rubber, I don't know about the metal tho'. The "Y" (venturi) is made of plastic so be careful with it. (Check it out too btw) Mine is an 87 so the configuration is slightly different. I didn't buy a new pipe, I just cut the ferrule and replaced the rubber with vacuum rated hose.

that's what I was thinking. air leak somewhere else like right below on the other hose. I would remove it and plug one end and pull a vacuum on it if in doubt

Good advice from the first two guys. And in addition, perhaps the copper line needs to be bent slightly so there is no stress on the rubber or plastic bits.

dan, thanks. I went back and sprayed in different places and it reves up the same so I think it finds its way to the intake. I think I have fixed most leaks but our 3.2 motors have a zillion places to leak! Car running much better now and starting much better. Still have to start with key 3 times and then computer and ICV warm up where it is supposed to be and then slowly comes back down to around 800 rpms. Anyway, thanks

Many things in that area could be picking up the spray. My "Y" was loose where the black tip goes into the grey part-epoxy fixed it. The cruise control or brake booster hoses? Gaskets at #3 intake? All intake nuts checked?

All intake bolts done twice. Every hose that I can possibly see I checked for cracks and tightened. Everything is a lot better now, just not perfect. I don’t think it will ever run like a tag Heuer watch!

I didn't think mine would either until it finally did! (You can quote me on that!) My last piece of the puzzle was a hairline crack in the intake air boot-could not be seen unless you flexed it hard. I missed it twice. Stay at it, you will find it!

Nick - glad you're making progress. If you really think you've gone over the vac lines, I think it might be a good idea to have somebody check/set your Air Fuel Mixture & idle, as I think there is still an outside chance that they may not be where you want them. I only say this b/c I know you've been working on this and chasing some other gremlins too. Good luck!

Dan, that should happen on Thursday. It goes to the shop . But I must ask, if it did change , how did it change? It has been fine for years. What would make it change from a set setting?

Also, I did set the idle air mixture with manual and with wire in proper locations in test area. In other words, base idle.
