Oil tank fitting 1973 911T

Hi guys,

I'm having a real hard time installing a new oil tank on my 1973 911T (mfi).
The old oil tank has to be replaced due to the fact that it is very rusty en leaking oil.
The original tank is hard to find (originally sportomatic but not anymore) but I was told the newer tanks should also fit.

After a many different tries, I still haven't been able to get the tank past the metal bracket on the right rear fender... What am I doing wrong?
Should I perhaps drop the suspension so I have more room and perhaps remove the right rear light assembly?

You should be able to get it in. I have an SC oil tank in my 70 with proper cutout for it. Pain to get installed but it is not impossible. Try every position. It doesn't go straight in upright. Bend the tab if necessary. It will go in.

Thanks Gary...

I really don't want to bend the tab (all new paint and not sure if I can prevent feder damage)
Still, good to know it can be done...

My end of year July build 73.5 originally came with the same oil tank as the 1974 model year. It's been 10 years since the last time I removed and reinstalled it. I don't remember exactly how, but it was doable by myself, a bit easier with someone helping.
As you can see, the later tank is almost the same size as the earlier one with separate filter console removed.
Mine needs work in that area of the fender so I will removing it again later this year.

Thanks for your reply Ed
It seems the bracket is still intact

Hello. I realize that it has been awhile since this post but, had a question: Did this later style tank work out? The oil filter console and different shape and bolt location seems very different. No problems fitting in the '73 without modifications? Thanks

Hi Mike,

No the later style tank just would not fit. I finally found the right one in Germany.

I don't know what issue D@vid ran into with his install, but this oil tank does fit my '73.5. It's kind of like installing the oil level indicator into the tank, when everything is in the right position it fits with no modification, as seen in my previous post. The studs all lined up
