Used gear sets

Hi Team. I’m looking for a taller 5th gear for a 901 transmission to put in my 912 2.0L. Some of the ones I’ve seen posted say they have matching numbers, and they’re about 2x the price of others. My questions are real basic;

Do I need a single gear or a pair of gears?

What is the importance of ‘matching numbers’?

Should I spend more on matching numbers parts?

Thanks!

Steve Yeatts

Find a 914 .709 5th gear. 31/22. Best to use a pair that have been running together for less noise.

Contact Dr Evil on the 914World forum. He rebuilds many transmissions and probably has some available.

Thanks Jack! You might have guessed I’m using a Type 4 motor and I am. How big of a deal is it to use a 914 trans in a 912? Don’t I have to change the shifter?

Flip the ring gear, use a 901 end cover and shift rod, same internal shift rods and forks if you use a side shift model. Still have to pull the gear cluster out to install the shift rod. Change internal shift rods for later ones if you use an end shift model.

While you would need to rebuild any transmission in order to change gears, there is another possibility. If you had a 914/4 trans, then the entire 914/4 mainshaft with gears could be used as a set while transferring all the 914 pinion components on to your 912 pinion shaft and using in your 912 case. Aluminum 912 case parts will not work properly with the 914 magnesium parts.
