Question Are all fuel pumps created equal

Hi all, I have had a look at the archives and not come up with anything yet but...

My fuel pump is sounding like the proverbial hamster in its wheel, I think (never owned a hamster, but its getting LOUD in here). So after doing some searching on the net etc I can source one in the UK for around £110. There have to be cheaper alternatives.

My question is can I get another make of fuel pump?
Are all fuel pumps made equal - or does it have to do with obtaining a certain amount of pressure/volume etc...? i.e. can I just get a generic pump from a local parts dealer for a pump thats made for another make of car?

Is it a case of you get what you pay for?

and on another note, what are the chances that its just the sound pads that have deteriorated (yeah right, I wish) not had a look yet but will probably check tomorrow.

Thanks in advance and goodnight all
Jakes

The Bosch pump is readily available new from non-dealer sources for around US$120. Dealer prices are more like US$220.

What I have read, is that the Bosch pump is more accurate, and consistant with regard to pressure (assuming that you don't have an external aftermarket regulator) which is required by the motronic on your engine.

OK, I have just bought a new Bosch pump. Thanks for the advice guys. I went to my local parts store and managed to source them directly from bosch, £85 inclusive. Which beats the £110 excl from the independant suppliers that I originally found.

So tomorrow it arrives and I will fit it.
Cheers Jakes

Edit. Now would be a good time to add an extra fuel cut off switch I suppose.....
