Fog light switch install.....
 

OMG !!!! I NEVER want to have to do THAT again. This was a virgin install... so had to cut the round indent between the rear defog and lighter...then drill a hole in the metal back in behind the plastic dash. I am using a stock Fog Light switch (thanks, Parts Heaven)
THEN ..... under the front "hood", the real work starts. 4 10 mmbolts to remove the cardboard 'firewall'. Remove the diagonal support (2 bolts). Remove the outside/cold air vent cover and screen, in the cowl (4 little screws). Loosen and remove the hoses to the fan housing. Remove the fan, two bolts and an electrical square plug. Remove the oddly shaped plastic housing to the lower vents that goes through the body under the fan/cold air intake body (1 screw only). Undo the two screws, down in the open cold air vent opening, that hold the cold air intake body to the cowl. Twist/pull, invent new cuss words, and remove the cold air housing out from under the cowl. NOW, you can see up in there, where the switch needs to go. You are very likely the first person to see in here, since the Porsche employee that assembled this 911. The rear defogger switch is visible, the cig lighter is hidden behind a defroster vent pipe. You will use the space in between them with a rubber 'plug'. Now, be sure you have done your wiring properly (I used a relay, and wired it so I can turn on the fogs anytime, independent of the headlights). With the same exacto blade you used to carefully cut the round hole in the dash, carefully cut the rubber 'plug' that is in the fog light 'hole' in the firewall, following the 'indent' that is cast into it, this will leave a hole slightly smaller then the round body of the switch, and will 'seal' it once you push it into the hole. Now, go into the car and carefully thread the 'top hat' onto the bigger threads of the switch poking through the hole you drilled in the metal 'sub' dash, and tighten it. Now screw on the Fog Light rubber knob with the 'fog' graphic (Yellow on earlier cars, green on later cars?) onto the smaller threads. You will need to add a 'jumper' from the brown wires (grounds) that go to the adjacent switch's light, to the little light tab in the middle of the back pf the Fog Switch, so it will light up when the switch is 'on'.
I may have missed something, but this should get you through it. What a PTIA !!!!! Reverse everything to put it all back together. Have a beer. Brag to your wife. Go write a f'ing novel on the BBS....and NEVER forget...

That's why it's so hard to do certain procedures on a 911, 'cause Umpa Lumpas are the only ones that can reach/do the work !!!! This is a closely guarded secret.

Sounds like you're traumatized. With all that blue sky in your blue county, what are the fogs for?

but....are you digging in to remove the SWITCH ??????
OR, you can just remove the knob and the'top hat' plastic 'nut', and push it gently back into the dead space under the cowl, JUST far enough to put a 'hole plug' in the dash hole.....That way, all the wiring and switch are still there, all you need do is reach in and grab it with some needle nose pliers, and pull it back, screw on the 'top hat', and re-attach the knob, IF, you, or the next owner decides to re-install the foggys.....

I wonder if there is an easier way to add a fog light switch in the factory location. What if you slid out radio and drilled a 1.5 inch hole in the sheet metal above the radio approximately 4 inches behind the factory location on the dash for the switch. You could then unscrew the knob on the fog light switch and push the switch up through the hole, tip it forward, use a finger to push it toward the hole you make in the dash. You would be able to easily thread the plastic pieces onto the switch. Anyone know if this is possible?

I found it easier to remove the clock which gives pretty easy access to the fog light switch. My arms are small enough to work through that opening in case this is helpful to someone else trying this.
