Help! What engine do I have and what injectors do I need?!?!?

Okay, okay. So I am replacing the clogged (and otherwise useless save for a paperweight) fuel injectors on my 1974 911 targa (no wisecracks please, I happen to like targas! :-P). So I order new injectors for the '74 and up 911's (part number 0 437 502 004), which are the same part #'s as the old injectors that I am replacing it. When I ordered the parts I ordered "all the o-rings and seals that I need", and I got the injectors, plus injector sleeves and 'o-rings' for said injector sleeves. Problem: my car did not come with injector sleeves, nor does it need o-rings for said sleeves. Instead it came with o-rings directly on the injector itself. (I have attached a jpeg, the new injector is in between the old ones, and the new o-rings are on top). The place I bought them from (Sorry Wayne, it was not with pelican) said that there is a possibility that my car was a 1973 1/2 and used the intermediate CIS system in use for 6 months prior to the introduction of the 1974 and on CIS systems, or that my car used the 2.4 instead of the 2.7 (used the last 2.4's before the engine was bumped up to 2.7). Now I have also attached a pic of the engine numbers, and I'm thinking that there is a possibility that that is a 2.4 instead of a 2.7 since it has the '901' . The questions that I have are two fold: 1) What engine do I have? Is it the 2.4 or 2.7? 2) What injectors should I use? Should I use the injectors for the 2.4 or the 2.7 with the early CIS system? Can I use the injectors that I have (for the '74 and up 2.7's, part 0 437 502 004) but just add the o-rings for the pre-1974 cars (since that is what the car came with--as far as I know at least). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Am I the only person seeing "Photo not available"?

Rot 911 02-24-2003 10:15 AM

Nope, can't see it either. And when I try to go directly to the web host of the picture I get "photo not available."

Tim Walsh 02-24-2003 10:18 AM

if you go directly and remove the "&size=lg" from the address you can see it.
Those injectors are REALLY long. I think it's a 2.4 CIS but I've never seen one in real life so I can't be sure.

Okay, easy way to do it, cut and paste:

Those are CIS injectors.

The way it all fits together (on my SC anyway) is the injector with O-ring fits into a plastic sleeve which is staked into the intake runner. There is an O-ring around the sleeve, that is roughly the size of the o-rings in the pic.

I believe it is the same for all CIS cars. Here is the pic from Wayne's catalog:

Thanks alot, Kurt! The old injectors that were on the car when I pulled them appear to be the later ('74 and on CIS injectors); however, there definately is no provision for the injector sleeves and o-rings. I was fooling around on the Pelicanparts website and it appears that the o-rings (the old ones), are the same as used for the '73 1/2 CIS systems. So I'm wondering can I just put the injectors in with the old o-rings, or will I have 'problems'. Thanks guys.

Paul if you do not have the injector sleeves, then you have the '73.5 CIS engine. And yes it is 2.7 liters (163.9 cubic inches). It looks like you bought the right injectors and all you need are the injector o-rings which Pelican sells and they look like this (the o-rings you have in your picture are for the injector sleeves):

73.5 CIS is a 2.4L.

jluetjen 02-24-2003 01:35 PM

Interesting... The label says "911T". Whatsup with that?

BTW - I'm taking apart a 2.4TK right now and I've got the injectors and rubber sleeve out. But how do I get that metal sleeve out?

Jim Sims 02-24-2003 04:07 PM

The metal sleeve (if it's the two bore size type) doesn't come out of the heads on the 2.4 l 73.5 CIS cars. It's swaged into place. Also the correct seal for the 73.5 CIS injectors isn't o-ring shaped; it's more of a top hat like shape (matches the metal sleeve). Jim
