Trouble with URO targa bar gasket/seal
I recently removed my targa bar and the seal that runs down the front of the bar to seal the top and the windows. Bought a new seal from host however I'm not happy with the fitment.
The side ends that have the felt on them don't seem to go down far enough to completely seal out the elements. I can see about three quarters of an inch of the side window isn't sealing with the gasket. The other trouble spot is on the top portion just passed the guide pins on the sides for the Targa Top. The sealed isn't wide enough to be pressed down into the channel and still fit around the guide pins. Has anyone else had trouble with this gasket recently? On any issues on Targa tops or seals, I would always defer to Dan at CarsInc for his recommendations.

I ordered a windshield seal for my W108 and three glass guys could not get the glass to fit in the channel. It was literally not usable. I ordered the mercedes gasket and it roped in perfectly on the first try. Pelican needs to dump this brand.

When I did mine I opted for the mid priced OEM seal. No issues.

Very sorry for the trouble, I'll go pull our OEM sample and compare its dimensions to seals from inventory. Regarding the middle of the seal, it's necessary for the top section to be a very tight fit and stretched to fit the guide pins (warming the seal in the sun or inside a pillowcase in a clothes drier makes it softer and easier to stretch), otherwise the installed seal can sag and fit poorly. This is by design, and the installation effort is worth the final result. If someone is doing a meticulous restoration and doesn't mind some extra labor, you can use a coupe door seal (of any brand) instead of the targa door seal. Rough-cut the ends about an inch too long to make it easier to work with, then carefully trim the ends for a fit that's more exact than factory. Hope that helps! Sorry, URO, but that picture is horse*****. The seam being there is wrong, it is ripe for leakage into the door and the car, and it looks like poo.
If that's your position on this matter, I think your design guys should spend some time looking at how the factory Porsche seal works. The fat part of the seal stops at the door top. |
We sell several hundred of these seals a year without complaints, but we're always open to improvements whenever possible. I'll report back on the measurements.

PS I had one of your seals in my targa. I did not complain, I just replaced it with the proper seal after I saw what your seal was like in the car. I did the same with the windshield seal, and chalked the whole thing up to "Don't buy URO" which is why your company suffers from this reputation on this board.
I'm not trying to bash you guys, because I do understand the adage "you get what you pay for" and your products do cost a lot less than Porsche or OEM...however this board is full of enthusiasts who tend to be more detail-oriented than average, so you may be fighting a losing battle here. If you are open to improvement ideas on this seal, (1) make it longer so that the business part of it touches the door top when installed, (2) switch from the flocking-type material you're using to a cloth material (the flocking wears off when the window goes up and down, ask me how I know), and (3) consider doing some kind of innovation like adding an internal drain tube that positively slots into the door seal, now that would be an improvement that would cause people to consider URO. |
Agreed. Make the URO seal somehow better than the original. Work to make the install better than the original. Make strides to meet and exceed the customer's expectations and watch the company's reputation go up exponentially.

We've seen them moving into the 914 market same MO. I'd be happy to look into making this part correctly. many of you probably don't know who 914rubber is, but we've been making 914 parts for over a decade, and our reputation in the 914 community speaks for itself.
I think this may be a good part to look at. What is the OEM part number? |
Speaking of URO seals, what's the word on the windshield seals? I need to replace mine, should I venture URO or it's a bad idea?

The windshield seal is one that you need to buy the best you can get. The URO seal “fits” like it’s made for a different car.

Here are the original part numbers for the seals that attach to the targa bar and windshield header for 911 Targa models. I'm not sure if there is one part number for all years or if the piece changed over the years.
