Thread size needed...

for the little black plastic lock knob on the top of the door sill for an SC.
Part # 928.555.359.02
Threads on to the long brass rod in the door 911.531.708.00

The thingy that sticks up when you unlock the door.

If anyone is sitting at home, can you wander into the garage and tell me what the threads are? Maybe M3x0.5?

My knob has been missing for years, and for some reason the rod is now starting to catch on the door sill when locked, preventing me from unlocking it. I want to walk down to Ace hardware and buy a simple metric threaded coupler or something as a cheap replacement. Maybe I'll even glue a small skull on it or something.

Yes, I know I can buy a replacement here for $5 and a week wait, or go to Rennline and pay $35 for some blingy ones, but I'm not that special :D

if you can measure across the thread points and see how many choices there are for mm per turn then you can figure it out. I assume it is not a special custom non-standard thread.

look at this chart - you will need a caliper to measure the major diameter - in the small sizes there is only one pitch

Mike,

Please take a picture of the subject. I have a hard time visualizing this part. Thanks.

Door lock mechanism.........

Mike,

Were you referring to this thing?

The threaded section measures about 4.5 mm x 0.70 pitch thread.

Yes, that part. My car is at home, I am at work, otherwise I'd toss one of my threading dies on there and check myself. I figured someone might know, and I could pick up something at lunch.

hcoles 04-24-2018 03:33 PM

From charts if it is 4.5mm major diameter then it is .75mm pitch. The small pitches are hard to measure.

I'm not sure a hardware coupler will fit in the opening of the top door trim.

Pazuzu 04-24-2018 07:13 PM

It does appear to be M4.5x0.75 based on my taps and dies. A M4x0.7 die doesn't thread onto the rod, but an M4x0.7 tap will thread into the plastic cap, very loosely. I expect that the 0.5mm diameter and 0.05mm thread pitch difference account for that looseness.

Stupid Porsche! M3x0.5 pieces are easy to fine...M4x0.7 pieces are easy to find...M4.5? Yeah...not so much.

Now I know how Rennline gets $35 for these things!

If all you want to do is cover the threads and do not care if it has a stock look, get a plastic thread protector and press it on or get some heat shrink tubing.
