Pertronix Ignitor fit in a 1969?
Will a Pertronix Ignitor fit in a 1969 distributor? The listings indicate they fit 72 and later distributors. I have an 0 231 159 007 (911S) and an 006 (911E). The Crane/Allison unit is listed for up to 69 and 70- by Pelican but the Crane web site says 1969-76?

No one has installed one of these in an early distributor?

Joe I don't have a definitive answer for you, but at least my post will bump this thread back up to the top. I don't know why the Pertronix would not fit in an early Bosch distributor although a quick google search only show applications from '72 on and and the 912E.

Thanks for the bump Kurt. I can't think of what the difference would be. The cap and rotors are the same. According to PP the points change. But with my luck I will buy one and it won't work. The racers probably all have crankfire but someone must have tried.

Hi Joe,
I installed a Pertronix in my 73"S" and it worked fine after 3 DOA units. Personally, I would go with the Crane Allison unit (laser), since it seemed to be more reliable. In all, when I got one that worked, it took me less than 15 minutes to get it installed and up and running. The other 3 units (DOA) made the installation impossible for me to qualify using their product ever again. You should not have any problem with the Bosch in your year car based on the fact that the distributors are basically the same with a different curve. By the way, their tech support stinks. I installed a Allison (nee crane) unit in a '67S dist. It has been working for about 15 yrs....
does your car have a marelli dist? I think its a pain in the balls to get one of the aformentioned ignitions to work in a marelli ( but Im sure it can be done) Ive seen a few problems with pertronix.. sometimes they just dont work. The Crane works fine in the Bosch.. and I recommend the Crane over the pertronix any day |

I'm pretty sure the Crane won't fit inside a Marelli. Find an early Bosch distributor and install the Crane in it. The ignition curve is better as well. My Crane XR-700 is 4+ years old - never a problem. Last year, I added Crane's Hi-6S box onto the system. Tach reads a little high and need to recalibrate with a resistor.

Want to do away with points in a Bosch. See first post. So the Crane unit is the way to go. Not another big box to install! MSD and tach adapter already crowding things up.

In my experience the Pertronix are failure prone, the MSD/Crane/Allison type systems have been great.

The Pertronix has worked without a hitch for me for 4 years and counting. I do, however, have the Crane Allison setup on one of my other early 911's and it is definitely a nice system. This worked from the day it went in without a hitch.
I do like the fact that the Pertronix is invisible and outside of the new wires that are exiting the distributor, there is no way you would know anything has been changed. The Crane Allison system can be a bit of a challenge to mount. Marc |

I've given up on the points dwell setting and I'm going for some form of a pointless system. My dizzy is a part number 0 231 159 007 which matches the engine...1970 2.2S. I've got a Permatune "blue" 6 pin CD ignition system (Which I wouldn't mind replacing also if someone can give me the exact replacement unit type to use).
Can anyone give me the exact Crane part number/type that will replace the points....once and for all!!!!!! Ken |

I have a 67S distributer and although Crane presently say that they have a pointless upgrade model for this dizzy, my ignition guy (after trying to fit a few of them) tells me that they don't fit. I also have a 69S dizzy, which he said will easily work because the setup is different. Any ideas?

I have the 0 231 159 007 -’69 -’71 2.0/2.2S dizzy. I just installed the Crane point replacement kit available from Pelican. This uses your current CD box. The tach works with no other stuff needed.

I have to warn you that the kit and instructions are pretty lame, and it took some tweeking to get it in, but it does work. I took some pics of my install, and was thinking of doing a tech article on it. I didn't find too much help searching the archives. Let me know if you need any help. |
What sort of tweaking? Did you have to clearance anything to get it to fit?

They give you an assortment of brackets, screws and shutter wheels in the kit. The bracket that the pickup fastens to didn't fit, so I had to get after it with a file until the screw would go through and line up with the mounting hole. I'll get the pics off my camera and post a couple to show you what I did.
Do you have the same distibutor as mine? I know others have had problems. |
