Removing pressed outer seal on speedometer
 

Would like to try repairing the odometer on my 73 911T. Any tricks for removing the outer seal that holds the plastic window? I've tinkered with it a bit and am fearful of destroying it. Thanks.

I repaired my instrument shortly after I got the car. I must say I was very apprehensive about messing with it. But it worked out fine.

I used a small (1/8") screwdriver and went around the circumference of the instrument and pried the metal up ever so slightly. I'm sure I went around the instrument several times before the metal ring was bent enough to allow it to easily come off.

After the repair was done I put things together and gingerly bent the ring back into place.

You might be more comfortable if you can lay the instrument on a hard rubber pad while working on it.

I did the same then used a piece of wood and a plastic hammer to carefully tap the metal that I had pried up back into place.

Thanks. Nick at Pelican suggested using hard plastic prying tools. I bought a cheap set at Harbor Freight and just kept going around and around the seal till it popped off. Not much damage. It's a lot easier snapping the seal back on!

Did mine a couple months ago. Just have to find a spot on the speedo and get under it with a THIN screw driver or other tool. Once started its easy to go around and bend up the rest.

Getting the needle off takes care. I twisted and pulled with out problem.

It's a shame that the repair shops have gotten so insanely expensive for relatively simple work....
