1976 911s Special Edition

Been doing some reasearch on here and elsewhere. Trying to figure out if my 76 is one of these cars. It’s the correct color, interior (well...was lol) single elephant ear, painted headlight rings. It had an aftermarket wheel on it when I bought it, so no signature wheel. I had heard before it might be, but dismissed it because an initial search said they were all Targas....have since learned that’s not the case. I don’t have a COA for this one but it doesn’t show on another I have seen.

Any ideas on how to confirm or rule out?

The paint code is L944...I have a non-sunroof coupe 1976 Signature Edition so there are more than just Targa's!

Here is what the interior should look like:

And the color with the correct color matched cookie cutters:

Is that interior specific to the special edition? Because I switched it out, but that is for certain the interior it had in it (when I got it).

My paint code is 944-9-3. Which is the correct paint code, but I suppose it could be ordered in that color. The combo of interior and paint would be a pretty strong supporting factor. Anything to be gained from the VIN? Did you get a COA, and does it reflect any packages as special trim?

...mostly just curiosity. She is vastly different now and I don’t see her going back in my days. Values don’t mean much to me. Just a great note for the records. Values might matter to my 10 and 11 year old kids some day.lol.

Yes that interior is specific to the Signature Edition. The plaid is woven, not a fabric. Wish mine was still in that original state as my interior was redone about 15 years ago...

I did find a vendor in Germany that sells the plaid if you are ever interested in restoring it. I plan to one day but not at the top of my priority list.

Ya, that would be great if you have some contact info for them. I might mothball some while it’s still available...just in case. So it would be extraordinary if this wasn’t an SE. any other way to verify that you know of?

What serial number is your VIN? Not sure if they were produced in series but mine is 0115 for that model year.

Here is the site that carries the material (scroll about halfway down the page):

Werk 924.com - Shop

It's the "Yellow Tweed":

Interior and paint means nothing when it comes to special editions. Those interiors and colors could be ordered without having a special edition. Dealers who had connections (AKA Vasek Polack) could get anything. The 1975 Silver Anniversary Porches came with Diamond Silver Metallic - and a blue tweed type interior - and these could and would be ordered without getting the Anniversary. Unless it's maybe on the COA which is a shot in the dark - and it's got the tell-tale pieces, it's sometimes hard to really tell.

Funny! These are the same guys who had the special fabric for my 88 924s SE (500 made). Really have the market cornered. And DAMN they are proud of their products. Only game in town though. Easy for me to *****....when I’m not the guy having material custom made for a car there is only 500 of or... 200 in this case.

True. The one I saw online sold for 93k at auction last year but the COA didn’t specify a SE package. That’s why I was curious if anyone had it on the COA.

So it looks like strong evidence that they were build in series. Mine is 0123, the one from the Gooding auction is 0180, the one at Schmitt was 0142 and yours is in the range as well (7 cars in front of mine) . If anyone has a low number, sub 100, it’s possible that they were the first 200 produced for the model year. Might make sense if it was for Ferry’s retirement, as I read. I wonder what the one on the cover of Panorama this month is.
