1987 911 Wheel dust caps?
I just noticed, after washing a small rock or two out of the rear wheel bearing areas, that the rear wheels don't have dust caps... since the wheels I'm using are new to me (used to be Fuchs, now Braids), I never noticed this before.
Is it normal for only the front wheels to have dust caps? See the pics - the one with the dust cap is the front. ![]()

My 86 911 looks the same. Good question.

No dust caps in rear, you're just looking at the end of the axle shaft so there is no unsealed bearing in the rear. Front bearings are not sealed, more the old school with two bearings inside so you need the dust cap to seal the outside. There is a seal on the far other side riding on the spindle.

@barorg: why not use a rim center cap as everybody else does?

These wheels don't have them - as the rep told me, "As they are completion wheels they are not designed for caps". (I guess that was competition, not completion).
