I will not be the only one to say this. Your webbing is toast. Your top cannot sit down properly under stress from the levers.

Dan Petchal.

This is a $1,200 rebuild and worth every penny.

New everything. Skin and headliner. Bushings, etc.

Save up and do it right. You, as a DIY guy have no chance. I say that with respect as I went through the DIY toil before sending off.

I got the heavy duty pre-cut and stitched German vinyl from Pelican and took it to a local upholstery lady. She installed new foam over the webbing, new headliner on the inside and then stretched and installed the vinyl for $160. It looks good, repels the rain and is quiet inside. Can't complain.

There’s a YouTube video (in German) showing the procedure of renewing the Targa top. I agree with previous posts that it may be easiest to have it done, but if you’re careful and measure twice to be sure the webbing is properly replaced, I don’t see where you couldn’t successfully renew it. Enjoy your project!

I did it myself with the pebbles surface from our host. It turned out “ok” but not great. I learned a lot and would be a lot better stretching it the next time. There won’t be a next time though as I’ll get it done by Dan who everyone raves about.

I’m pretty handy and crafty but this is a challenging job.

same experience as Lake Guy for me. Did it myself with the "pebbles" material from Pelican. Turned out ok... not great.

Dan Petchal did my top. 100% satisfied and worth every penny. Drove through snow and rain this week with zero leaks, no wind buffeting, and what I would call zero wind noise for a Targa with the top on (in comparison to the wind noise the top generated before the rebuild).

Dan did my top. Turned out great. IIRC, I paid the shipping to him, but he included the return shipping in his price. He has several levels of top restoration, depending on the condition of your top. Mine had a crack in the top frame that he welded up. Obviously, I went with total rebuild.

I do a lot of repairs myself and have owned and restored many cars. I studied the targa top of my 86 Carrara and decided it was too complicated to get it right. I had Dan redo the entire top, replace bent metal and one of the big arms, painted the metal and replace the entire top. It is basically perfect. I still had some wind noise and with his advice replaced all the seals. I purchased them from him. I am beyond satisfied, it is a concours restoration of the top. If the top is worn, so is everything underneath it. I did it 2 years ago and it holds up and I am sure it will last the rest of my life basically.

1ricardo - I'm not going to be much help in terms of choosing the best vinyl top and headliner, but I will encourage you to do it yourself. Take your time, read threads on it, look at videos etc.

About 15 years ago I changed the top and headliner, without the benefit of forums, YouTube etc.

Is it perfect? - no, but I think it looks great, and functions fine.

Another pic - with it on

Good luck with the project.

Jason

Dear Jason,

Thank you so much for you advise and help! I'll try to fix it myself, me an a upholstery shop here in my town
I'm in Brazil and the cost involved in ship out the targa to be fixed is prohibitive hence my effort to try to fix it myself...
If I dont have more feedbacks form the forum as far as concern the qulity of the material to use I'll go with the Pebbles material from Pelican as LAKE GUY and KUBA-KUBA did

thanks again

Ricardo
